What is "essential" S'ware for T60p . . .
I used a migration utility to move files from my TP T42p (the "old" machine) to my T60p. Strangely, after updating some drivers and software using ThinkVantage's update utility, I started getting a weird messages on shut down and boot up (like "RegesterClass, Class Already Exists" and "ThinkVantage Access Connections Main Service Module has encountered a problem and needs to close . . . ," and so on).
I called Lenovo in warranty service and they told me it was a "registry" problem and they don't troubleshoot registry problems. I have to re-image my drive.
I didn't want to do that so, by trial and error, I found out the problem was an entry in the msconfig "Services" utility called "Access Connections Main Service (Lenovo)." I unchecked it and all the problems went away. That took, all toll, about ten hours.
In any event, here are my questions:
First, I want to delete all the prior ThinkPad and IBM oriented software that I "migrated" from my old TP to my T60p, but I don't know what's essential. This is what I think is old unecessary stuff:
1. ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software;
2. ThinkPad Configuration
3. ThinkPad Full Screen Magnifier
4. ThinkPad Easy Eject Utility
5. ThinkPad Keyboard Customizer Utility
6. ThinkPad Modem
7. ThinkPad PC Card Power Policy
8. ThinkPad Presentation Director
9. ThinkPad Ultr Nav Driver
10. ThinkPad Ultra Nav Wizard
11. Access IBM Message Center
12. IBM 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java 2 V1.4.2
13. IBM Integrated 56K Modem
14. IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore
15. IBM Themes
16. IBM ThinkPad Configuration
Are these duplicative or unnecessary in light of the ThinkVantage software packages? This is what I think is current, pre-install software:
1. ThinkVantage Access Connections
2. TV Active Protection System
3. TV Away Manager
4. TV Productivity Manager
5. TV Technologies Welcome Message
Second, because the recent download using ThinkVantage's update utility seemed to eff everything up for me, I'd like to uninstall all the ThinkVantage software and reinstall it or, just reinstall it over the top of what I have. Can I do this without making things worse. By the way, I was told by Lenovo ThinkPad telephone service that he was "aware" that the download utility in ThinkVantage was "screwy" and "unreliable" and that I should always download and use Software Installer.
Sorry this is so long. I hope it can be a short answer.

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums
Well, your T60p should have come with the Bleutooth software already installed as well as Access Connections, etc; basically, the latest versions, with some additions, of what you had on your T42. I would say that there is no reason to migrate over 1-16 as most of them should have been on the T60p to begin with.
It really depends on what programs you want to keep as you see the use in them, or not.

Thanks for that greeting and your reply, Christopher.
Well, I purchased the T60p in August. At that time, I did the migration. The migration software didn't give you a lot of choice. It just sent over all the software on the "C:" drive of my T42p to the T60p. The items in 1-16 are already on my T60p machine.
So, aside from whether I want any of this or that, if you could assume I don't want to lose any functionality, are 1-16 old and duplicative of the TV software? I'm afraid that the "old" software will cause more conflicts with the TV software. That's why I'd like to eliminate it.
And, can I effectively uninstall the TV software and then reinstall it so I'm sure I don't have any corrupted files from the faulty update-download (which I did about three days ago).
Thanks,
Bill

Yup; you can uninstall all of TV. Most of the software that came over from the T42 is essentially redundant in the sense that it is already provided for you on the T60p from the get go. Replicating those over might just cause more trouble than it is worth in terms of conflicts and other such issues. To make it easier, you can uninstall everything but the System Updater and then have it find and automatically download/install all the necessary pacakages for you.

I would strongly suggest that you run a very good registry cleaner (something like TuneUp Utilities 2006) after uninstalling the software and before reinstalling the software. Also be sure to shut down your computer, to allow it to update the registry and it may take much longer than normal to shut down, just allow it to do it's thing. Then repeat running the registry cleaner until it can't repair anything more, before updating your Thinkpad

There are a bunch of reg cleaners, I use CCleaner and Registry First Aid and they both work great. CCleaner is lighter, in terms of functionality, although RFA's scans generally take longer.

Well knock on wood, so far TuneUp 2006 is the only registry cleaner that I've run that seems to find most if not all problems, and also does not delete something that shouldn't be deleted.
I've found that in deleting keys one will often create other keys that are orphan. running the registry cleaner until it quits finding errors is my preferred method now, then rebooting, and running the cleaner once again just to be sure everything is stable.
