Case Disassembly - warranty issues?

Hello there.

I am very happy with the T60 I have in my signature on the whole, however there is an issue that I beginning to get disheartened about.

At first I thought I had 'funky hinges'. Now it seems I have an entire funky screen enclosure. The fit was never snug, but I thought this just needed a little breaking in. Not the case.

When closed, the lid has a very shoddy fit, with the left side of the LCD enclosure not being entirely closed down, and the right side going a little skew. I am pretty sure I could simply send it off to Lenovo (I was offered service as a remedy for the dark spots at the bottom corners of the LCD), however as things stand I need the laptop daily.

Would it void my warranty to disassemble the entire screen enclosure and then re-assemble it for a better fit?

My take on the subject is that if you're capable of doing the task correctly Lenovo would never know that you had the case open.

I was going to say "any idiot could take apart and put together a Thinkpad" until my last experience with a Lenovo on-site tech. Keep track of which screw goes where, and save the little stickers that cover the screwholes.

You can disassemble the LCD casing while it is still connected to the base, i.e., without removing the top from the base, IFF (if and only if) you do the following:

Place a stack of magazines the same height as the base (approx. 2cm) behind the Thinkpad so that when you fold the screen back to a horizontal position, the LCD panel case rests flat on the stack of magazines. Then you can remove the screws and remove the front bezel.

If you open the LCD cover with the panel "in the air", i.e., in the normal open position, well ... just don't!

Notes: There is no sticker inside that "breaks" when you open the top. There is double-sided tape that holds the bottom of the bezel to the LCD panel; "unstick" that tape when you remove the front bezel. The front bezel of the LCD cover opens from the bottom to the top, not vice versa. Unstick the bottom edge and rotate up.
