I just figured out how to turn off the screen with the computer still running (Fn + F3 and then "X turn off screen"). That somewhat helps.

But sometimes I wish I could just close the laptop for a few minutes without it going into suspense mode, cutting me off the VPN connection, off the network and so forth.

Is there a way to set it so that it only goes into suspense mode after, say, 15 minutes.

Or is is there a short cut to supress the suspense mode before closing the lid?

Right click the desktop, select properties, go to the screen saver tab, click power, select the advanced tab. You'll see a drop down menu that says "when I close the lid of this portable computer:" select "do nothing" from the drop down. That way the computer will stay on when you close it (screen shuts off because there is a switch to know when it's closed) and it won't automatically go into standby/hibernate until your power properties are selected to do so.

In addition to what Marlinspike said, and only if you wanted it to go into suspend after a set period of time, you could set the the lid event to "Do nothing" and then set a suspend-for-idle-duration timer (3 idle minutes, 5 idle minutes, 15 idle minutes, etc) if you want a "timed" effect. :)
