quick last minute Qs before purchase

#1 Post by allen » Tue Nov 14, 2006 2:44 am

hey, i hope i'm not breaking some kind of rules, i'm obviously pretty newb, but have learned a bunch here, and am just about ready to purchase a T60...

is there a universal agreement on the intel pro wireless adapter vs. the thinkpad one? or differences?

should i wait until there's a 15" T60p with core 2 duo and flexview? or just get the T60 version, only difference i can tell being the video memory, 256mb vs. 128mb. main concern being relatively heavy photoshop use, multiple large MF scans, raw files. but no video/film or 3d work.
a bit of waiting wouldn't bother me much, it just seems silly that there is a 15" T60p with flexview with core duo, but not core 2 duo.

btw, on somewhat of a random rant, it's really annoying that as computers can be made faster, newer versions of software are made with higher system req's, even if you're doing the same things. this is my main motivation for getting the newest fastest laptop i can, oh how i wish it weren't this way, we'd all save so much money.

thanks for all the help!

Video card won't affect photoshop work (fellow photog here). FYI, doing a photoshop benchmark test (basically add noise 400% then zoom blur 100% at best quality, there's more too it) my 2007-7ju was 11 seconds faster than a macbook pro that had the same specs except the macbook had twice as much ram as I have.

Also, flexview screen is great, but it's worthless for photo editing out of the box, you absolutely must color calibrate it (I did anyways). Once calibrated it's great, but from the factory 0R 0G 255B showed as purple.

I just ordered a T60p, and the sales guy specifically recommended the intel wireless solution over the 'thinkpad' one. Not sure why...

I would say you would benefit much more from core2 duo than extra video memory for the tasks you list ;)

I asked about it at a time when intel was listing a 5-10 day delay, and I mentioned that to the guy and he said "Well, in theory they should be the same, but really you want the intel one, and unless you're in a hurry I recommend getting that one."

Maybe its something to do with the 'centrino' branding? i.e you can only say centrino if its an INTEL wireless card...?

From my last check, I noticed that T60 model offer

15" SXGA+ (1400x1050) IPS TFT FlexView

with a 2G/4m cache CPU and the price is cheap!

This is exactly what a commerical society is. People are conditioned to go after something "better" and do not realize that it is open ended.

I think Linux is relatively better and a lot of low-end machines can run Linux pretty well.

The ThinkPad wireless uses the Atheros chipset which most will say is somewhat better than the Intel. The Intel will likely offer slightly better battery life with wireless on though. I'm planning to go with the ThinkPad wireless on my T60 config.
