Vista sticker
This is a stupid question, but you never know:
With the Vista sticker requirement for the upgrade, will I become ineligiable if I peel off the vista sticker? I think all these stickers on the left side ruin the look.

Re: Vista sticker
When you upgrade microsoft requires you to take a digital picture from 27 different angles, then have them certified by nasa, the cia, and the ups store that they are infact of your computer, then you must submit to two blood tests and a lie detector test.marlinspike wrote:This is a stupid question, but you never know:

I haven't peeled my stickers off yet. I will say I got my computer Thursday night. By the end of the day on friday, the ati lettering had already worn off my "graphics by ati" sticker..
There's already quite a number of messages in the forum with various methods of removing the gummy residue. Search for Goo-Gone although I've never had a problem just peeling the stickers off carefully, next using the stickers themselves to to dab at the remaining residue and lastly rubbing it clean with a finger.

I know all sorts of ways to get sticker residue off, though I can't say I would trust goo gone on plastic. I was able to get rid of it with my thumb (enough rubbing back and forth gets the job done), but it's jiust annoying is all.

I make it a habit of removing the windows sticker as soon as I recieve a laptop. I should remove the core duo sticker too, but I like it
I hate it when you go to remove a sticker down the road, and the area around it has faded but not the area under the sticker, so you are left with this patch of clean plastic that looks really stupid.

BEST WAY:
I spend $1 dollar to get a extremly nice korea eraser from jetpens.com, and erase all the gummy residue.

I also wanted to remove all the stickers when my laptop came, but was afraid (lazy) to peel them incase I had to use some solvent to take out the goo. Luckily, I had my palmrest replaced and all the one I got had no stickers on it.
Thinkpads looks awesome without stickers. the only sticker I'd want on my laptop is the angled IBM logo. Oh, and that rubberised texture. Everyone looking at my travel mouse comments on it.

The T60 is my second thinkpad--and laptop for the matter--and I noticed with my T42 that after about a year, the sticker's faces wore off or got scratched. Finally they ended up being all scratched off so I just had two shiny blank squares on my laptop!
When I decided to get rid of them, I was now left with two perfectly unworn square surfaces. By contrast to the surrounding area which had been exposed to my palms for so long, they stood out like a sore thumb!
My advice: remove the stickers asap unless you think you'll have them on there forever.
What I did with my T60 was this: as soon as I had everything installed and had been through playing around on it I removed (carefully) the stickers with a swiss army knife. I was left with no residue. The stickers were then placed on a bag which sits now inside my T60 instruction manual bag. So if I ever feel the need to put them back on--say if I were to sell the laptop--I can do it quite easily.

Soap and a rag
I strongly advise against using any chemicals on the sticky residue. I tried some solvent on an old X31 palm rest and it took of the goo, all right, as well as the snazzy black coating. Since then, I've used soap and rags to get the gunk off. Takes a while, but doesn't do any damage.

At least I don't have to piss in a cup.... yet....OscarTheGrouch wrote:When you upgrade microsoft requires you to take a digital picture from 27 different angles, then have them certified by nasa, the cia, and the ups store that they are infact of your computer, then you must submit to two blood tests and a lie detector test.marlinspike wrote:This is a stupid question, but you never know:

First thing I do on any new machine.... remove the stickers..... Be careful of your finish.... but isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover can work.... so can30 minutes of patiently rubbing the gummy crap off.robh wrote:

It's really annoying that these Marketing PinHeads think I want billboards for their product on MY computer --or that by ruining the esthetic, more people will want one.... like buying a new top of the line Lexus with MADE BY LEXUS painted on it's side in BIG ORANGE LETTERS.... Classy.... Not.... but same concept
jeeesh, I already bought the [censored] machine.... now you want me to advertise for you for FREE?..... and have those stupid thick stickers annoying my palms for a few years --yeah..... good idea.... lets give you more money.
AND plus... I get walk around with ugly tags on my machine....
Bzzzt..... I really don't think so..... Once I know it boots, the stickers come off.....

After reading posts about having to use hairdryers etc to get the stickers off I was a little worried, but there was no problem. I just rubbed those stickers off using my nails and breath, and now my thinkpad looks like god wanted it to look... ok, just kidding, I'm not religious, but now it is all black and clean looking. Just use your breath and nails, could it be easier?
It also feels pretty good not having to feel those stickers against my left palm while typing, I like it. Now if I only could make the mouse be as black and cool I'd be happy - look out for my review of the MS wireless notebook presenter mouse in another thread on here.
I have just had my TP for about a month but after my first attempt to remove the stickers it looked like the plastic around the stickers had been sunburnt but there was no need to worry - with a little more saliva and rubbing everything was alright. I'm still glad that I didn´t wait too long, because that could be a problem, especially if you live somewhere where the sun actually shines.
