When you get a machine to hibernate, you are turning it off, whereas standby puts the machine in a state that minimizes power consumption but the machine is still on. The former conserves the battery a lot more.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

Why put hibernate in then ? If it just shuts it off .pianowizard wrote:When you get a machine to hibernate, you are turning it off, whereas standby puts the machine in a state that minimizes power consumption but the machine is still on. The former conserves the battery a lot more.

Because it takes much less time to start up later on, and the machine goes back to the same state in which the machine was put into hibernation, i.e. the same programs will still be running after you turn the machine back on.
When I don't need the computer for a short period (e.g. half an hour), I put it into standby. At the end of the day, I usually get it to hibernate. About once a week though, I shut it down, because machines tend to slow down if you don't shut it down completely every once in a while.
