T60P ordering page - wireless card options

#1 Post by xcgames » Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:52 pm

Wireless cards [10]
Integrated Wi-Fi wireless upgradable [subtract $25.00]
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (US/CAN/LA/AP) [add $5.00]
ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/AN

What's the advantage of getting the Thinkpad LAN mini-PCIE card (default option) over the integrated Wi-fi? (besides 802.11a compatiblity, which is worthless because no one uses it).

Is the $25 extra bucks worth it?

Integrated Wi-Fi wireless upgradable = empty slot (i.e., you have no WiFi)
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG = the empty slot is filled with the Intel WiFi card (i.e., you have a Centrino machine)
Thinkpad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi = the empty slot is filled with the IBM WiFi card (i.e., you do not have a Centrino machine)

found this info on lenovo's website regarding the wireless card, looks like all 3 are wireless capable.
The dual-mode ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN adapter automatically searches for the best WLAN connection, enabling connectivity to existing 802.11b, and 802.11g networks.
The Intel PRO/Wireless ABG Mini-PCI Adapter also enables connectivity to existing 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g networks. Wireless security is important, and the Intel PRO/Wireless ABG Mini-PCI Adapter supports most encryption protocols so you can connect to corporate networks easily and securely. Compatibility with the 802.11b and 802.11g protocols allows you to leverage the large install base of 802.11b technology. You also benefit from higher data rates up to 54 Mbps when connecting to an 802.11g or 802.1 1a-based access point.

Compatibility with the 802.11b and 802.11g protocols lets you leverage the large install base of 802.11b technology. You also benefit from higher data rates up to 54 Mbps when connecting to an 802.11g or 802.11a-based access point. In addition, this adapter supports most major wireless encryption policies.
