How much run time does ultrabay battery add?

#1 Post by marlinspike » Tue Nov 21, 2006 2:18 pm

How much run time do those with 15" screens find the ultrabay battery adds? I can get 6.5hrs with everything set to save power with the new BIOS, which will just get me overseas, but it'd be nice to have some extra battery to use in the airport and while at stopovers to avoid plugging in. I wonder if the ultrabay will give enough juice to get this done or if I need a 6 cell.
Thanks,
Richard

Ultrabay battery has roughly 50% capacity of a 6 cell battery

I would honestly go for an extra six cell. The ultrabay batteries have a nasty habbit of dying.

I have the ultrabay with my 15" t60p and I normally also get 6.5hrs (no wireless, everything min) on just the 9cell, and I get 8hrs on the ultrabay which is consistent with its 33% capacity of the 9 cell.
It might not be a bad idea to spring for the 6 cell given the issues with the ultrabay batteries, my 1st one lost 4wh of maximum capacity after just 4 cycles and had I had get lenovo ship me a new one

I would go for an extra 6-cell or 9-cell; I have several UltraBay batteries and, while they start out at around 33% of the 9-cell, they tend to drop their capacity over time faster than any of the main batteries would; partially because of the way that they are charged and discharged. :)

The disadvantage with the Ultrabay battery, when I tested it on a T43, was that the system discharges the Ultrabay battery first, then the main battery. Seems kind of backwards to me

It will add a little over 2 hours to a machine with integrated graphics.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

I agree. I wish it was selectable which battery the system should drain first.

Overall, I really like my ultrabay battery. When on long flights, I use a 6-cell and the ultrabay battery, and then have a 9-cell in my bag as a backup. I don't think I've ever needed the 9-cell on domestic flights.

Yeah, I don't like that it drains first, I want it to drain second. In that case, I won't buy it. I'll just wait until my next trip across the atlantic (or pacific) and buy another 9-cell then.
