Switch fn and ctrl key function?

#1 Post by sunmiguel » Wed Nov 22, 2006 6:16 am

I am just getting familiarized with the (amazing) t60 keyboard, but one thing I cannot handle so far is the fact that the control key is not placed under the shift key, which makes me twist my fingers everytime I highlight text or use other ctrl key commands.

Is there a way to switch the function of the two keys around (press fn and the computer responds with ctrl)?

Thanks
Michael

There is a utility that comes in the thinkvantage suite that might have some features for this.

Press the Thinkvantage button on the keyboard - On the screen menu, click "Configure" - "Manage Keyboard & pointing devices" - "Map keys to functions". The rest is straightforward.

Unfortunately, you can not remap the Ctrl and Fn keys. People (including myself) have been trying to figure out a way to remap the keys for years with no luck.

dough...why should I manage then...? I tried it anyways but couldn't find that option in thinkvantage > configuration...thought it was worth a try.

(For 1500 years scientists were thinking that spiders had 6 legs, until someone thought it might be wise to give a shot and count the number...)

I mapped the caps lock as control, and i really like it. its far more convenient to use than any standard control key.

Google for this, many have done this, there should be many solutions.

thank you so much somlaifischer, I found several sites, but I guess I won't be able to do it if I don't even know how to access the scan code mappings in the registry (that was a quote btw...).

Is there a straight forward - fool proof way to explain what you did or should I get an IT guy do it for me?

well, i am on ubuntu.com, and i have a simple checkbox in my system settings to do this.

but for xp, this link
http://www.manicai.net/comp/swap-caps-ctrl.html
suggests that you simply download that file, and import it, if i remember correctly this means that you simply double-click it, and xp will offer to import it for you...

also this http://lists.thedatalist.com/pages/Mous ... _Tools.htm program called ctrl2cap seems like it can do it for you...

of course one might break things while hacking around, but well, its the best way to learn :)

GReat, thnks. I just found a tutor on windows registry, looks like I could do it, and I guess I could do a system restore if I mess things up, right?

Will try your link first to save time and switch to capslock, and if I have time to play around with winreg I'll do my desired switch.

Thanks for your help again.

...found sharpkeys, I think that might do it.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/sharpkeys.html

If not at least it'll give me the codes.
