Hi all ,

I need some assistance from you guys here. My ThinkPad T60p 2623D8U came with 1 GB RAM pre-installed. I thought it would be enough for the work I do (some time-pass simulations). But you never have enough RAM.. do you? I soon realized that 1 GB RAM is getting used very easily.

So I have decided to install additional RAM in my machine. I also own a 600X (9 yrs old and still working like a bull, although the battery performance has gone down). In the 600X its very easy to install an additional RAM, but it seems that in my T60p, I would need to put in a lot of work before I install an additional RAM.

I also hear that there are conflicting RAM modules, which can cause problem. So I need some suggestions from you guys about the whole procedure. I know all this is given in the manuals that came with the machine, but I am more comfortable when I get answers here .

I am interested in installing 2 GB of additional RAM. I have Windows XP (pro) installed. Please help me with the following:

1. Which make of RAM (2GB) should I go for?

2. Is there a cheap and best option for me?

3. Are there any conflicting issues?

4. Precautions to take while installing new RAM module.

This is what the tab book says about the already installed memory.

PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 / non-parity / CL5 / dual
channel capable / two 200-pin SO-DIMM sockets / std mem in 1 socket / 1 socket avail....

IF I were you , I would buy Kingston which I believe it has good quality.

Check out:

www.crucial.com or www.crucial.co.uk (if you are in Europe), I have had good experiences with them.

I have always preferred 18004memory.com to Crucial.com because the former has much better prices. For 2GB modules for T60p:

Crucial: $919.99US
18004memory: $699.00US

If I were you, I would wait for several months to let these insane prices go down a little bit. The 1GB you already have should be plenty. $920 is almost enough to buy a new T60!

I guess you idea could work out pretty disappointing. I have not tried your 3GB configuration on my machine, but windows xp will shadow some areas of the memory for the pci devices. I am not quite sure which area is shadowed (not usable as memory).
Above 2 or below 4. If it is below 4, then you should be fine.
If nobody has an answer to this, I can try to remove one 2GBytes stick and put in my old 1Gbyte.

In regards to modules, I was lucky on ebay and got 2x2GBytes modules from samsung for 540 USD.

I think XP can only see 3 Gig max

I'd recommend getting just another 1GB module for a total of 2GB and you will probably see the performance increase that you desire. Try that first. You can always return the 1 GB RAM if you desire.

Pagefile is no substitute for ram...in fact, unless you have it on a separate scratch disk it's plain old worthless. Though, I think 2 1gb sticks is the way to go.
