Alarming number of dead pixels
Alarming number of dead pixels
I've had my T60 (2007-72A) since June this year. It arrived with zero dead pixels and remained like that till last month. Around mid october, I saw my first dead pixel (actually it was a group of 3). Since then, 10 more have appeared (individually and in groups of up to 3). While all of them are visible on a while background, only some of them are apparent on coloured backgrounds.
I've tried massaging the dead pixels as well as flashing the pixels using UndeadPixel, but to no avail. I'm more or less pretty sure that they are dead pixels rather than stuck pixels. I'm getting very worried that it will deteriorate further.
Is there anyone else facing this problem? My screen is a 15" Flexview at SXGA+ resolution. Is there anything I can do about it, or do I just have to grin and bear with it? Does the warranty cover dead pixels which come up after so long?

personally, I just check that website, it is redicous. I can not breath if my LCD has more than 3 dead pix.
No wonder the price of Thinkpad is cheaper than before, for one of this replacement policy has been changed. Why do we still go for Thinkpad? for it has a very good quality.
So, I am really worry about my just ordered T60.

If you call them say you have that particular number of dead pixles, they will replace it for you. I doubt they'll even ask you if it matches criteria.
Dell has bad customer service, and I replaced a couple of LCD monitors (20 and 24) because of 1 dead pixel. They have their policy listed there just to deter people from calling, but if you really do press them I doubt they will refuse a repair.

Thanks for the links. According to that link, I'm still not eligible for a replacement. Just to confirm, if I've a 3 year standard international warranty, would I be eligible for the LCD replacement only for the 1st year or throughout the 3 years? If I were to be extremely EXTREMELY unlucky, would I be allowed multiple replacements, or just one throughout the warranty period?
What worries me more is how quickly these dead pixels started appearing. The laptop is barely even 6 months old. My T30 only started getting dead pixels about a couple of years ago; the T42 is still good, while my now dead Fujitsu E7010 never had a single dead pixel. Why is it that my most expensive laptop yet has to have dead pixels so soon? While I do know that age is not really a predictor for dead pixels appearing on LCDs, as opposed to manufacturing QC, it still pains me. They just don't make them like they used to.
This certainly isn't the best time for me. My MS Laser Mouse 6000 started going wonky just this week. I bought it same time as my T60 and it's been a wonderful mouse. Cable so thin, I'd never notice it was there, tracking so smooth and precise, it was almost as if my thoughts were controlling the cursor. It was one of the best mice I'd ever used. Now, I'm back to using one of my backup mice, a 5 year old Wheel Mouse Optical, which has seen much abuse. It just seems so clunky and slow and heavy compared to the Laser Mouse 6000... sad thing is, it works. *sigh*
Back to my LCD problem... While I could still have not accepted the laptop when I bought it if it had dead pixels, I have no guarantee that the replacement LCD will not have dead pixels. Not even Lenovo can guarantee that.
Now that I know that I do have an avenue for replacement, I think I will wait a bit to see how many more of these dead pixels start appearing, and how often too.
Thanks guys!

I recently bought my son a ThinkPad (R60) - our first ThinkPad. I'm really impressed with it, but it arrived with a stuck pixel - no problem, just one. I've had HPs, Sonys, Fijutsus and Compaqs, and I've not had a dead or stuck pixel before in over four years of heavy use. Just lucky? What screen manufacturer do Lenovo use on it's R and T series?
To the OP: I would definately talk with Lenovo. They should look after you beacuse you are not being at all unreasonable and the ThinkPad brand means quality. Let us all know how it goes - I'll be surprisede if they don't do the right thing.
As for the Lenovo chart, if my very small company bought an SXGA ThinkPad, it would go back long before it had 11 stuck pixels. And if it had 11 stuck Pixels it would probably be the last one we bought.
In terms of quality, our Fijitsu was absolutely the worst notebook we bought, followed by HP. Sony was surprisingly good, but they are not interested in Linux and small businesses. Lenovo looks really well built and comes with great apps and features. If this one holds up, we'll buy more - not that that's going to effect Lenovo but hey, if thousands of small businesses do the same it all counts.
