Hi, I've had my t60 for three days now - now suddenly sleep/hibernate doesn't work anymore (Fn-F4 or Fn-F12) ??
Sleep or hibernate is not an option in the Shutdown menu either.
what did I do ??

I recently had this same problem occur with my wife's T42. I tried various solutions without result. I had been out-of-town for about 2 months and the Standby problem occurred during that time. Finally I used Windows System Restore. I restored to a point 2 months previous when Standby worked correctly. System Restore did it's magic in this case and Standby returned.
I did notice that my wife had added a printer while I was gone, and after System Restore, the printer was no longer available. After bringing everything else up-to-date, I decided to add the printer back. Standby again was unavailable. FWIW, the printer was an old Epson C60 inkjet. The driver disk had drivers for W2K and 98SE. I uninstalled the printer then went to Epson's site and downloaded a newer driver for XP. The new driver worked fine, and Standby still worked after installing it.
EDIT: Not sure if it matters, but I used System Restore from Windows SAFE MODE.

sounds strange !
I did play around with my printer yesterday, and the sleep/hibernate functionality might have dissapeared after that.
I tried connecting my usb printer to a terastation and printing over the network - but no luck.
I now removed the printer driver, but sleep/hibernate still does not work.

further testing:
I open power manager ( from the green battery in the taskbar), then on the 'Global power settings' page I check 'enable hibernation'
but... when I press either apply or OK, and then come back to the same page, the enable hibernation checkbox is unchecked ! so somehow either the powermanager or windows thinks that I shouldn't be able to put the machine into standby or hibernation??

you described my symptoms exactly. Microsoft has a fix that solved my problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095
now, you didn't mention whether or not you get the "Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API" message, but i did. also, i have 2GB of RAM. this patch mentions that this hibernation problem is more prevalent on systems with >1GB of RAM.

I have 1gb RAM, I don't get the error message above, standby and hibernate are just disabled and there is now way to go into standby/hibernate !!
I tried the fix above, but there is no change.
I'll try system restore to get back to a point where everything was working...

I also have a few questions about hybernate.
Does the laptop use power during hybernate and can I remove the battery during hybernate?

Oops. Errant reply by me. Correct reply below.
The laptop does not use any power while in hibernation. The battery can be removed without harm during hibernation.

This is REALLY getting on my nerves now...
did a complete system recovery using the thinkvantage thing yesterday, took probably 1-2 hours, everything works fine.
then reproduced the standy/hibernate problem today, it's associated with either Daemon tools (
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) or an electronics design software I'm installing after that (PADS).
Uninstalling both of those doesn't help !
Anyone know how I can reinstall the thinkvantage power manager ? someone suggested firs uninstalling it and then re-installing it, but can I get it from lenovo's website somewhere ?

My T42 just recently developed a problem with hanging going into Standby (not your exact problem, but annoying). At the same time it stopped detecting my WM5 cell phone on the USB port. I knew it was a software issue but could not nail down the culprit.
I tried a bunch of stuff, including System Restore with no luck. Finally I tried this
registry cleaner which has a fully functional 30 day trial. It found over 700 problems (I scanned the list and they were mostly related to things I had installed at one time or another so not bogus detections). After letting it fix them standby and USB both work fine now.
Might be worth a try. I usually prefer to understand the problem and fix it properly rather than taking the shotgun approach, but in this case it worked and saved me time.

thanks for the tip, I ran the registry cleaner and it found about 300 things to fix - but it didn't fix my problem: standby and hibernate are still unavailable....

a further update:
uninstalling the thinkvantage power management driver and the powermanager - rebooting - re-installing the power management driver and the powermanager - reboot - no improvement.
how can it be this difficult ??? my only option seems to be a complete rescue and recovery which resets the whole disk to factory settings.
But how can I be sure that I won't run into the same problem again at a later point ? seems there's no real fix ??
right now the suspicous programs are either Nero (Ultra edition), Daemon tools (for mounting .nrg and .iso files), or PADS Power PCB which installs 'sentinel system driver' although it should get all the licence stuff over the network.
I'm not at all happy about the situation since the dissapearing of standby/hibernate seems to be a one-way thing: you install some piece of software which disables standby/hibernate and then there's no way to get back !
I've tried the windows system restore, but it keeps telling me that my system cannot be restored to the state it was in this morning. Do I need to manually create system restore points before I install each piece of new software - just to be sure ?
not a happy t60 owner right now,

This usually happens when you installed drivers that are not 100% ACPI compatible. You must have all drivers compatible with sleep. If one isnt, then you cant go to sleep anymore.
Had that problem with graphic card drivers.

Hi, thanks for the info, but shouldn't these drivers be uninstalled so that they are not active when I uninstall the software that caused the problem in the first place ?
is there a way to disable drivers one by one so that I could find the one that is causing my problem ?

Are you running a non-MS firewall?

smvp6459 wrote:Are you running a non-MS firewall?
when recovering the harddisk to factory default I chose not to install any Symantec software.
After the normal windows install I have added F-Secure Antivirus Client Security 6.02, and run windows update a number of times.
note that the sleep/hibernate problem does not start with the addition of the F-Secure software - sleep/hibernate was working just fine with F-secure, Office2003, Thunderbird, Firefox etc.
The problems start with either software that mounts .nrg or .iso files as virtual CD/DVD drives (could this be a non-conforming driver, mentioned above?), OR my electronics design suite (PADS PowerPCB, PowerLogic) which has some fancy security built-in (the software checks for a licence server over the network).
I haven't figured out which one of the two it is yet - testing that takes several hours since the rescue&recovery windows install takes at least 1h...
thanks for any help you can give,

Did you try System Restore from SAFE MODE? I have seen occasions where System Restore was only is successful when used in SAFE MODE.

Thanks, that works !
Now I've cured the standby/hibernate problem, but I still don't know what causes it
So, are any of you successfully using virtual CD/DVD software like Nero or Daemontools to mount .nrg and .iso files on a T60 ?? without screwing up standby/hibernate ?

I don't know the answer to your other questions. You can try installing each piece of software individually, then after reboot click on the Start button and choose Turn off computer. If Standby is greyed out, then you found your culprit.

Daemontools 3.47 works fine for me an I use hibernate all the time.

Oh thank you thank you thank you!!! I woke up this morning to the 'api' error message and didn't think any more about it--everything was running so I left well enough alone. Until I tried to hibernate . . . AND IT WAS NO LONGER AN OPTION--gack! But once again the thinkpad forum saves me a day of web searches

now the worst part, i delete all restore point before i realized the problem. now i got to reinstall the system.. anybody has better solution??

Hello everyone,
After 12h of trial and error and googleling (no system restore point available

), I've finally found the solution to our problem. It's caused by the SSIPDDP dongle driver installed by Mentor PADS. This driver IS NOT removed by uninstalling PADS. Since I knew that it was related to a driver and PADS, I was googleling every single .SYS file from the PADS install cdrom when I stumbled on this solution.
Here is the link to the original solution :
http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?b ... 16#M244716
And this is a quote from the original solution.
Good news, I found the problem that seems to unique to the IBM Lenovo T60p. I was using a 3rd party parallel port driver called SSIPDDP with NI-VISA and a LabView VI. The SSIPDDP driver is a hidden non plug and play driver, so I did not see it on my system device driver list, until I enabled view hidden drivers. I use the parallel port on my computer to control SOS (Silicon on Sapphire) RF switches from Peregrine semiconductor. I was using the wrong driver, and the driver was miss-configured in the 1st place.
When my parallel port controller card was plugged into the parallel port, then my T60p could standby or hibernate. When my parallel port controller card was not plugged into my parallel port, then standby and hibernate were disabled. Of course, this is backwards. I want to disable standby and hibernate when I am controlling external devices through my parallel port, not the other way around.
LabView was not the problem, and NI-VISA could be used to detect and set-up my parallel port with a LabView VI. I was using the wrong driver. I used this driver on my old IBM T42, and I did not have this problem, but this same driver causes a problem on my new IBM Lenovo T60p. This SSIPDDP driver I was using is hacked version of a old parallel port license dongle driver for PADS schematic entry and PCB layout.
If you are using a docking station, you may notice the your T60p standby and hibernate options appear only when you are plugged into your docking station.
Here are two solutions. I used the 1st solution and it worked, but I did not try the 2nd solution, since I need to use the driver sometimes.
Control Panels > System > Device Manger > View > Show Hidden Devices
--- Non-Plug and Play Drivers
--- --- SSIPDDP > Disable > Reboot
Alternately, if you are not using an SSI (Pink) parallel port key for PADS, OrCad, MatLab, or other CAD licenses,
under %SYSTEMROOT%, remove any of the following files, (if they exist), then reboot.
SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\SSIPDDP.SYS
SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\SSIDDDP.SYS
SYSTEM32\SSIVDDP.SYS
Sorry about the confusion.
Don
If anyone working at IBM/Lenovo read this, please check the compatibility issues between this dongle driver and the IBM T60p as it seems to be a very specific combination of hardware and software causing this problem.

Alexandre Desnoyers
