Win2K3 server locks up when on battery power

#1 Post by FJC2 » Mon Nov 27, 2006 1:45 pm

I've just been given a new T60 from work and run across a rather strange problem. Whenever I unplug both the network cable and power cord the OS completely locks up. Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it takes a few minutes and then freezes. A few other people in the office have seen the same problem, but so far no one has come up with a solution. Anyone here have any clues as to what could be causing this problem?

My guess is when you put it on battery power and remove the network cable you are enabling the power save feature on the network card, the card power downs, a condition I expect a product like server was not designed for. At all who needs an unconnected server?

I've had the same thoughts and it makes sense. Why would a server ever need to worry aout things like this? Unfortunately in my situation I am developing software that runs on Windows 2003 servers so the prevailing wisdom is that we should develop on the same OS that we deploy on.

Is there a way to control how the network card reacts when the PC is put on battery power? I can deal with shorter battery life if it means I can actually use the thing. As it stands it can't be used on battery power at all.

My guess is if you open device manager| Network adapters | Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL Network Connection and double click it you'll see a tab called Power Management, uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

If you don't have a power management tab, try looking on the Advanced tab in the property tab.

There is also a possibility that you may have a setting in the BIOS area. Which BIOS version are you running?

Another possibility is before removing the network cable try going into Network Connections and disable the Intel PRO/1000 PL device.

Well, changing the power management settings did not resolve the issue. I'm going to give the other suggesstions a shot later tonight and see if they work.

Try disabling deep sleep power down feature.

You can find that under the driver's system properties under device manager.

That did it. Amazingly, hours on the phone with Lenovo tech support did not yield that answer. Gotta say I'm happy I found this place! :D
