Core 2 Duo Upgrade

#1 Post by edwin108 » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:50 pm

Hello,

I just bought a C2D T7600 for my ThinkPad T60. When I put in the new processor, the computer only turned on (I could hear the fan and hard drive), but the screen remained blank. I also tried to reseat the processor but it still wouldn't start up. What should I do?

Thanks in advance

Does it still work with your old processor?

You need to:

1) reinstall your old CPU and boot into windows.
2) download and run CPU-Z and verify your motherboard revision (ONLY rev 3 and higher can run C2D, if you are rev 1 or 2 you are SOL)
3) Make sure you are running BIOS 2.01 or higher if the above checks out.

If everthing above checks out, then you have a dead CPU (you DID REMEMBER to ground yourself before taking the CPU out of the bag and while you were working, right?).

Update your BIOS (remember to TURN OFF any BIOS passwords) and you will be good to go on the T7600.

didn't know that, just ran CPU-Z and it turned out that my T60 comes with Rev 3 mainboard, so relieved. :)

Sorry, this may be a newbie question:

Where did you purchase the C2D?

I currently have a T60p standard duo 2GHz... and REV 3 mother board. Could I upgrade to the C2D T7600 by just replacing the processor?

Thanks,

You also need a BIOS upgrade if you are, indeed, going to upgrade the whole planar to a T60 Core 2 Duo model. :)

You can order them straight from IBM/Lenovo.

Turboqueef,

I bought the C2D T7600 from Newegg.com with AS5 Ffor about $700.

Christopher-wolf,

Thanks, the BIOS upgrade did the trick!

Stephenaron,

With the Rev3 mobo and 2.03, all you need to do is remove the palm rest, remove the keyboard, remove the keyboard bezel and wireless wan card (if you have one) and the antenna cable(s), then you need to remove the heatsink and the clip the holds it down over the gpu. Then you need to turn the screw on the cpu socket and it simply pops out. Then the new cpu needs to be dropped in, then thermal paste needs to be applied to it. Be sure to remove all the remaining thermal paste from the heatsink.

Brentpresley,

Thank you very much!

Any of the Core 2 Duos (laptop versions) will work.

The T5xxx series has 2MB caches.
The T7xxx series has 4MB caches.

An upgrade from 2.16 to 2.33 hardly seems worth the $700 cost  or am I missing something here?

Never said that. :) But 2.16 duo core to 2.16 core2duo might be worth 419.

Core 2 vs Core Duo

4MB cache vs 2MB
15% faster clock for clock (so that 2.33 is actually the speed of a ~2.68 Core Duo, if it existed)

Don't you guys worry about the warranty issue after the upgrade? Or you keep the old cpu just in case?

In Russia (afaik in other countries too) you lose warranty if you replace CPU (Core Duo -> Core 2 Duo). But as you said nobody prevents you to keep an old CPU.

just be careful not to bend or make any marks on anything when you are replacing the cpu. if you need to bring in the computer for service, just replace the old processor and pretend you never opened it.

Congrats on the upgrade, but you should have bought off eBay for the chip. You would have saved $100+. Enough for a 1GB stick of RAM.

CPUs are like diamonds, assuming the chip is shipped to you working, they are as good used as they are new.

You are missing a lot here. First, I don't think you void the warranty by upgrading your OS. Second, 64-bit OSs utilize the full potential of your 64-bit CPU. And what $ are you talking about? Vista is a free upgrade if you bought the laptop recently, and Linux is free.

15% is optimistic in some conditions, less so in others.

Interesting article, it ends like this
Looking at older application performance, the Core 2 Duo advantage shrinks to 5.5% at the same clock speed. The performance difference here is not enough to justify an upgrade if you're a Core Duo owner, but for a first time buyer if prices are the same, the Core 2 Duo is simply the right choice.
I'm not so sure it's worth spending $700 on the new CPU and void a warranty just for a 5-10% occasional increase.

Rwang, I meant voiding warranty due to cpu swap

If you're running Linux, you can compile for the 64-bit environment, meaning you get full advantage of that boost. You're not running older applications at that point.

Let's also hope that you can use 4GB of RAM in a 64-bit environment, which would make some power users happy, but I haven't seen an authoritative word on whether or not that will work.
