weird feedback noise

just noticed a strange thing on my T60

if I place my hand around the machine just where the left mouse button of the mouse pad is, I get a nasty feedback sound from the speakers ! a bit surprising when it first happened.

I've also noticed with skype etc. that the mic volume can't be turned up very high - otherwise I also get the same high pitch feedback sound.

any good solutions to these problems other than using an external headset ?

I know I should look in the manual, but is the speaker in the front edge just below the left/right mousepad button ? and the Mic is the hole just below Fn ?
