Using a PATA HDD in T60

I'll be soon having a 30 GB HDD from an X31 I purchased from ebay; I also have a 80 GB Hitachi PATA from another laptop. Is there a way I can use these drives internally on the T60, or does the t60 take in only SATA drives?

I think you could buy an ultrabay adapter and use one of them as a 2nd HDD. This would require you to substitute the HDD adapter for the optical drive.
Also, of course, you could buy a cheap 2.5" USB 2.0 enclosure and use it via a USB port.

I don't think that is possible - the ultrabay adapter is for SATA too - it is to clarify this that I posted the question.

Perhaps in a ThinkPad dock?

A dock is too expensive for me - I'd rather get a USB enclosure

There are two different options for hard drive adapters for the Ultrabay Slim. One will accept a PATA drive, while the other will accept a SATA driver. Both will work in the T60:
41U3148 -- PATA
40Y8725 -- SATA

dbertoni5000, this
IBM link doesn't list T60 as compatible with the PATA adapter 41U3148. Can you confirm this?
Brent, any input on this?

I have the PATA version in my T42; it works well. I knew they were still making it because I have seen it online in accessory parts lists for sale on the Lenovo website as recently as earlier this week.
Lenovo has a whole bunch of websites that give the illusion of being for specific groups of purchasers, e.g. customers of Bank of America, Visa card holders, Amex card holders, etc. The accessory parts are cheaper on those sites.
If you don't have bookmarks for any of them, either google for some likely combination (such as "visa" and "thinkpad") or go to any of the scads of online deal sites such as fatwallet, techbargains.net, slickdeals.net, and search with similar terms. I saw the Pata version for about $35 including shipping earlier this week.
Alternatively, use froogle or pricegrabber with the part number and see what you pull up. Finally, some of this stuff ends up on ebay. I just ordered a thinkpad USB floppy drive off ebay which was half of the lowest price I found, with shipping included, in any dealer's store.

This is interesting. My understanding was that the Ultrabay items were cross compatible across series. I'd still assume they still are, but you are likely to hear from Lenovo tech support that you could try to use the PATA adapter but that it "isn't supported." I went to the Lenovo website and acted like I was going to buy a T60; there are quite a few things they try to sell you in the configuration process, one of which is the SATA adapter, but not including the PATA adapter.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a PATA adapter if other people here have experience using it in a T60. Since I don't yet own a T60, I can't test my adapter and give you a response based on actual experience.
One other thing to consider is that hard drives are cheap as dirt right now. The fact that you are going to have a couple of spare hard drives soon does not mean that you have a couple of valuable items you are going to have to figure out what to do with. You could always throw them into cheap 2.5mm USB 2 boxes (they frequently go for less than $15 delivered on the deal sites) and you'd have portable storage you can use with all your computers. Alternatively, you could ebay them, sell them here, or give them away.

I don't have any trouble using my ultra bay PATA setup from my T42 with my T60 2613-HNU. It works just fine and I didn't have any trouble booting from it either. In fact, I installed XP x64 to a PATA drive in that adapter just to see how it would work with the Core 2 Duo.

I was using the adapter in the bay when I posted the message, and it works quite well. I suspect it's not listed as "compatible" because only SATA hard drives are considered compatible with the T60 series.

If you remove the ultra bay from the T60 and look inside the hold with a flashlight, you'll see two connectors: one for SATA, another for PATA.
I use a PATA drive in my ultrabay/T60 all the time. In fact, the T42 HD caddy works in the T60 perfectly.

I use both the sata and pata ultrabay adapters in my t60. Both work fine. I got my pata from buy.com in a few days with a google discount, no sales tax and free shipping.

That's a good deal. Put the total over $50 and it comes to $30 for the adapter. You can't find these too often, jump on this if you want one.

IBM sells both the PATA and SATA adapters for ~30 bucks online. You might need to deal with tax or shipping though.
