Has anyone substituted an OEM HD for the Lenovo-supplied HD in their T60? On my T43p I upgraded my HD -- tried Western Digital, Hitachi and Seagate. All 3 produce an error on startup -- 2010 -- telling me the HD is not qualified for my machine. Even the Seagate which is same model as sold by Lenovo for $150 more! The error doesn't appear to affect operation but it's a nuisance and apparently a longstanding issue for T4x (especially T43p I'm told).

Considering going to a T60p but I'd prefer to get one with small HD and use my 100GB 7200rpm Seagate -- will I get same error?

I've put a 100GB hitachi HD in mine, not errors here , should be fine if your HD is SATA and not PATA(don't know what at T4x uses)

T60 requires a SATA internal disk; T43 instead, as far as I know, a PATA one. Thus, I doubt you will be able to use the Seagate on the T60. Check before you buy!

Thanks! ....a good point to be reminded of (I'd forgotten that). I think I'll stick with the HD that comes with it.

The 2010 error does not exist on the t60. Just about any serial ata 2.5" drive will work(see my sig. below). Consider getting a 7200rpm sata for the internal drive and get a pata ultabay tray(41U3148) for your older parallel drives.

The one thing that might not (almost positively) work is the hard drive boot password.................that function is built into the hdd FW to correspond to the laptop functionality.

Remember, even if you removed a dasd with the password set, IT WILL NOT work in any other machine, because the FW won't transfer any data until the password is entered.

That function probably isn't a standard, but custom in IBM FW on the drives they specify.

This is conjecture to some degree, as how the dasd password code operates is not public knowledge, but how it has to work to fully protect the data if the HW is installed in another machine disctates it must work this way..................or in a very similar way.

The HDD password is, actually, an ATA standard last I checked, ATA-3 ANSI Standard (2008D AT
Attachment - 3 Interface) I think it is; although the catch here is that not only is it rather obscure and esoteric in definition, but also in implementation. I am not sure I have seen *any* Thinkpad HDD with a HDDPW on it work in another system, even though the password feature was supported. Some systems support different maximum length passwords too, even beyond the "standard" annoyingly enough.

It's been my long time experience that setting HDD passwords is often a disaster waiting to happen; especially in the corporate environment in which I have seen this type of disaster all to often. The end result is most often

There was firmware upgrade on the web site for some Hitachi drives. They never really say what might happen but I could only assume data loss. I think they use a SATA HDD contoler with a PATA bridge.

My T60 originally came with a Hitachi 80 Gig 5400 rpm
I replaced it with Seagate 100 Gig 7200 Rpm without
