System Migration Assistant

#1 Post by pinesol » Mon Dec 18, 2006 2:24 pm

I've owned a T60 for a week or so and updated the system and application programs with the Thinkvantage System Update.

Now I am trying to install the application programs for my Canon Digital camera. I can't complete it because it requires 'SMAsetup.msi', which apparently is part of the Thinkvantage System Magration Assistant.

Although I see this System Mmigration Assistant listed in the Add or Remove Programs of the Control panet, but not in the START -> Programs -> Thinkvantage.

I tried to install it again by downloading the current 'sa5120ww.exe' from the Lenovo site. But I can't install it with an error message, 1607: Unable to install Installshield Scripting Runtime.

What do I do now? :x

I don't own a T60, but today by coincidence I uninstalled the System Migration Assistant from my T42. I don't see how this program could possibly be required for you to do a fresh install of your digital camera programs on a new system, especially if you never used the System Migration Assistant to transfer your settings from another system in the first place.

Before uninstalling this program I looked over what it offers and concluded that it was bloatware that offered nothing whatever, at least to me. The purpose of the program is to help someone migrate their application settings from an old computer to a new one. Once again, the relationship between this program and your ability to load digital camera software on your new system escapes me.

Perhaps you could benefit from a registry cleaning program. One that was recommended to me here yesterday is called "CCleaner." You could google for it and download it for free and try it out.

You need to update your InstallShield 10.5 for the 1607 error.
You can get it from

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322

Basically unzip ISScript1050.zip and double click ISScript1050.Msi
to install the update.

My t-60 launches System Migration Assistant every time I even select "properties" or "create shortcut" or try to copy file from one folder to another by draging it. Then it never finds SMAsetup.msi and when I press cancel, error 1706 ocures. Usually after pressing cancel it let me to finnish the started process.

I too updated the system and application programs with the Thinkvantage System Update and started getting the "can't find SMAsetup.msi" message and Error 1706 stating that it can't find it. I see people having this issue but no resolution. Ideas?
