Competition for T60 widescreen?

#1 Post by rmendoza » Thu Dec 21, 2006 5:12 pm

What does everyone think, is this Dell a pretty good deal that would compete with a T60 widescreen? I know there are others, like HP.

This Dell is a business-grade laptop with pretty good configuration and great warranty. I was just wondering how it stacks up against the T60 15.4.

Have you really used the particular model in question? I have seen lots of people who have played briefly with only one or two Dell laptops bash ALL Dell computers in general.

I can't say anything about the D820, but I do own a relatively old 15.4" widescreen laptop made by Dell (Inspiron 6000), which is okay in terms quality. Last week, I played with a newer 15.4" Inspiron (probably the E1505) at a local mall, and it's quality is noticeably better than mine, so I guess Dell laptops have been getting better. The Latitude line is supposed to be superior to the Inspiron line, so I imagine the D820 to be even better.

While I second pianowizard's statement that Dells have been getting better, (the inspiron e14xx/e15xx series is very decent for a budget limited student), I will definitely say that thinkpads are on a completely different level. I used the D620 for a week very recently, and it is a good laptop for the cost.

But you should notice one point: any non-thinkpad laptop 'ages' very fast - it is just enough to look at an year-old thinkpad and an year-old Dell - the thinkpad is as sturday as the day it was bought, and the dell is beginning to fall apart (even the latitude series).
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX

My partner has the 820 and I''m not impressed. The keyboard and the screen are not up to par with a thinkpad T60P.

My first notebook was a Dell latitude it was a great notebook
But not as great as my second notebook the ThinkPad R40
I would say IBM-Lenovo is better in terms of quality and durability.

I currently own a Dell 600m, and I agree that they quality is inferior to a ThinkPad.

However, mine is a consumer-grade laptop. As someone else said, the Latitude series is better than the Inspirion. A friend of mine has one at work (my university has a contract with Dell) and it seems pretty sturdy.

That said, there is a reason why I finally decided to switch to a TP. Nonetheless, I thought that the above-referenced computer seemed like a decent deal with the configuration, construction (magnesium alloy) and warranty (3 yrs, including accidental damage protection).

I owned a 600m briefly and it's one of the worst Dell laptops I have ever used. The 700m is much much better, nearly as good as the best Thinkpads.

I forgot to say that the same configuration on a widescreen TP is $2637.00, with the warranty and everything. So I guess the price difference sounds about the same as the difference with other TPs and their "competition".

So the price difference is pretty small. In this case, it's a no-brainer: get the T60!

I like to look at driver support also. With a TP, you know 3 years from now they will still make updates for your TP, do you think you would get any updates on a 3 year old Dell?

Again, I believe that the TPs are superior. However, I have a two-year old Dell 600m, a model that is more than four years old, and I still get updates for drivers, BIOS, etc. So, I think that in my very personal experience, this criticism does not apply. Maybe someone else has a different experience.

As someone else said before, if the price difference is only about $300, and I could spare them, I would definitely go with the TP.
