Fingerprint reader not found

#1 Post by gator » Thu Dec 21, 2006 5:22 pm

I got fed up with the 3+ min startup times and decided to remove CSS7 from my machine. In my attempts earlier to speed-up the boot time I had disabled the fingerprint reader, but I don't remember how and where I did it. I want to enable it again - can someone tell me how?

I have the security chip enabled in the BIOS (is this necessary for the fingerprint reader to work? No, right?). When I try to enrol fingerprints, this is the message I get:

Can someone tell me how to enable the fingerprint reader?

EDIT: updated with screenshot

GomJabbar, I have this installed already i my system ... I still get the error message I mentioned in the first post. I had my palmrest replaced once - do you think I have to unsinstall and re-install the finger print software because of this?

I believe the ATMEL TPM driver has to be installed for the Fingerprint Reader to work. Look in Device Manager for the ATMEL driver. I forget exactly where it's located - I think it is under System Devices. When you install the driver, I believe it enables the device in the BIOS. If the device is disabled in the BIOS, you can try enabling it in the BIOS first, then see if the drivers are automatically found by Windows (since you had them previously with CSS).

I do have the TPM drivers installed - I also tried reinstalling the FPR software, but nothing seems to work. The security chip is enabled in the BIOS too. I remember changing one particluar entry in the registry to prevent password manager to load during startup:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\Password Manager

(changed value from 0 to 1).

I haven't yet checked if this entry is still present in the registry and causing the error messages I mentioned, but I would guess that if I had uninstalled CSS, this entry should have gone too. I'll go ahead and check this though I doubt that this is what is causing the trouble.

Are there any specific settings in Device Manager or Thingad System Configuration tool or anywhere else where it is possible to see whether the fingerprint reader is connected/active? Do you have any other suggestion, Gomjabbar?

EDIT: I just checked the registry and things seem to be in order - that entry is not present.

I have no more ideas. I do not have a Fingerprint Reader on my ThinkPad, so I only know a little about it.

Thanks for your suggestions Gomjabbar. I have a question:

Should there be an entry for the fingerprint reader in the 'Security' section in BIOS?

I have uploaded a screenshot of the error message I get, for better clarity of the problem. I also get the message "Please connect fingerprint sensor" on my login screen when I boot into windows.

Call 800-IBM-SERV and they will help you. They are generally very helpful with problems.

Have you tried going into the fingerprint control center to enable finger print logon support .. Start >>>All Programs>>Thinkvantage>>Fingerprint>>Finger print Control Center>> 2nd Tab >> Enable fingerprint logon support ( or something along those lines )

Thinkslim, I have indeed checked it, and the welcome screen during login also says 'Please connect fingerprint reader'. I press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the login/pwd screen to log in to the machine.

I have also checked that the reader is connected to the motherboard.

I reset the system to factory settings and still get the same message. I opened the palmrest and reattached it, again to no avail. What should I do to get my fingerprint reader to work?
