How do you turn off monitor without affecting operation?
I'm doing some extensive file copying and don't need the display on. I know I can set power options so the monitor will turn off after x minutes, but I figure there must be a way to do it at will. If I almost close the case, the monitor goes off, but it appears that the system goes into standby. How do I shut off the display at will without my having to sign back on (fingerprint reader)? TIA.

You could open power manager and go to the tab that says "Global power settings". Then say when you close lid: do nothing. This way you could close your lid, the screen shuts off and the system keeps operating. Yup, it works pretty good.

Fn+F7 toggles between internal, external, and "both" displays. Rather than turn off the display, Fn+F7 just moves the image to another screen.
If you don't have an external screen attached, the video hardware will still be active and consuming more power than Fn+F3.
