Rescue & Recovery backup fails

I've run R&R 3.1 for awhile with no problems. But now when a backup runs, the progress bar is stuck at 0%, although I can see the HD activity light flickering. Half an hour later I get a popup with the error message: "The backup did not complete successfully." and the program exits without completing the backup.

And that's it. No details, no extended error message, nothing. Any hints? Is there any error log I might look in? I don't want to reformat my HD and reinstall at this point, so please don't suggest it :-)

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply. There's lots and lots of free space...

It looks like you might have two different issues going on here.

The most important one of the backup not completing successfully can be attributed to a corrupted file on the hard drive. Open My Computer in Windows, right-click on the C: drive and choose: Properties > Tools > Error-checking > Check Now... > check box to: Automatically fix file system errors, then click on Start. You will probably have to reboot for the file system errors to be repaired. Note that if you have set up more than one partition or have more than one hard drive installed, the other partitions or drives may need to be Error-checked as well.

Regarding the progress bar not advancing, this can happen but it does not necessarily mean you have a problem.

IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore - Backup is running, but the progress bar is not advancing
Thanks for the reply. I will scan the disk and try again. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure that the stuck progress bar is related to the failure, since the last time the backup worked the progress bar also worked. Now the progress bar is stuck and I get the error message. Hopefully solving one problem will solve the other... *fingers crossed*

Any tips on where to find extended error information?

The backup did not complete successfully - R&R

This post describes a problem and the solution - to perhaps help others if they see a similar message.

I had a number of problems with the hard disk in my R52 and I ended up having to recreate the drive. Having done this successfully after a bit of trouble I then tried to use R&R to perform a backup. This was R&R V4 build 314. The R&R screens showed that I still had some backups from the old disk on my external USB hard drive, so I tried to delete these since they were of no more use to me. Nothing happened - the system just seemed to loop. Eventually I lost patience with the system and aborted the task, and set about trying to find out how to delete the files manually. To do this you need to go to Explorer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View and then select "Show Hidden files and folders", and deselect "Hide protected operating system files". I then saw the RRbackups folder on the USB Hard Drive. I went in there and deleted what looked like the backup files. Sure enough when I then went back to the R&R menus it did not show any backup files, however I now got the "The backup did not complete successfully" message after some minutes of processing and the progress bar never moved off the 1% figure. It took a lot of head scratching and looking at logs before I eventually found the engine.log file on my system where I found the clue to the problem - this log contained the following lines.

Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Engine: br_funcs.exe - version is '04.0a.13a.00'
Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Verbatim: MergeIncrementals(DriveLetter='C:', Destination='F:\RRbackups', Local='0', High level='2'
Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Verbatim: Unable to remove directory 'F:\RRbackups\C\MERGE\dats' - WinRC = 0x00000003
Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Verbatim: Unable to remove directory 'F:\RRbackups\C\MERGE' - WinRC = 0x00000003
Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Engine: Unable to merge contents - The merge directory F:\RRbackups\C\MERGE already exists
Sat Oct 27 15:45:41 2007 Verbatim: MergeIncrementals exiting with return code 0x0000054d

The clue was the "unable to merge" message. In my attempt at deleting the old backup files, I had only removed the obvious files and I guess buried in some of the other information in the RRbackups directory was information saying that old partial backup files still existed on the system. When I deleted the whole of the contents of the RRbackups directory (I did not delete the directory itself) I was then able to create a backup successfully. By this time I had also deleted the MiniNT and Preboot directories on my USB hard drive and these were recreated as part of the next backup. I also resinstated the file view settings!

One other tip here - if you have a hard drive that seems to be full and yet you cannot find where all the space has gone, you can do the same thing and view the hidden RRbackups directory - you may well find that there are 10's of GB taken up with RR backup files that the system has been quietly, helpfully creating (but unbeknown to you) for you. I have found this problem with two R50e machines which we were about to buy new drives for - having deleted these files (and set up a more reasonable R&R policy) we no longer need new, larger hard drives!

I'm having a similar issue, I think I might know the answer but want confirmation.

I've been using R&R successfully for a couple years on my T42p. My normal backup process is to backup to my 2nd HDD as primary and a network location as secondary. When I run a backup R&R first makes the backup to the 2nd HDD, then copies it to the network location.

Last weekend I upgraded the 2nd HDD to a Seagate 160 GB. I tried to run a backup just to the new drive, but it failed with the "Backup did not complete successfully" error, and engine.log has the same merge errors in it.

I next deleted the network backups (through R&R) and tried again, but it still failed. I then tried backing up to only the network location, which worked. I copied the network backup to the 2nd HDD, but R&R refused to see it and I still could not do a backup to the 2nd HDD. I then did an incremental backup to the network with no problem.

I'm thinking that the network and 2nd HDD got out of synch when I tried to backup to the 2nd HDD with no files on it, are still out of synch, and I need to delete the network backup through R&R, delete all of the R&R folders on the 2nd HDD, and try again. Does anybody have a better idea?

Maybe because the 2nd HDD didn't have a base backup on it, that is why it failed.

Ed, You didn't say what you did when you upgraded the 2nd HDD - did you copy all the directories across including the hidden, protected operating system R&R ones?

I suspect you're right in thinking your best option is to delete all the R&R data from the two disks and start everything off again - it seems like (as in my case) R&R has got confused about its status - somehow it does not seem to be very good at recovering itself when something is amiss, and as we've both discovered the messages are rather cryptic and the documentation less than forthcoming. A bit of a shame really because it does not give you the confidence you really want in this sort of application.

By the way I would not rely on R&R deleting everything for you - I would go in there and make everything visible on both disks (hidden files, protected operating system files) and then manually delete the contents of the RRbackups directory - that way you can be sure everything is cleaned out.

good luck, Bernard

Initially I started out with the drive empty but formatted, thinking (silly me) that R&R would be smart enough to see that there were no backups and start with a Base backup. But it seems that it remembered somewhere in it's guts that there should be backups there, and also remembered there were backups on the network.

I agree that R&R does not inspire confidence. I don't trust it, and I use TrueImage as a backup backup. The only reason I keep R&R around is that t has a few really neat features - like being able to restore just the system files to a point in time without disturbing the data.

Still, I'm tempted to blow R&R away and let TrueImage set up it's bootable recovery environment in place of R&R. If I can't get this working in the next day or so I think that's what I'll do.

I could be modest and say great minds think like alike! since like you I don't trust it entirely - its like a lot of vendor built-in things - they don't seem as robust or user friendly as some of the externally supplied stuff despite the best of intentions. I too use belt and braces to back up my data - the Syncback freebie in my case - to a USB drive.

I suspect the fact that you started off with an empty 2nd HDD lies at the root of your problem and as you say R&R somewhere (I honestly haven't tried to find out where) keeps a record of what it believes is the sacrosanct status of the system vis a vis its backups, and this blind faith is at the heart of our problems.

I think you need to delete everything in the RRbackups directories on both disks and then kick it off again - that was what cured my problem which does sound very similar to yours, although I didn't have the second copy of the backups like you have.

Well as we thought deleting the network backup and the R&R folders from the 2nd HDD solved the problem.

I wish they wouldn't make it so complicated trying to make it simple. With TrueImage I can make as many base backups as I want and store them anywhere, and I can then choose to make an incremental or differential backup from any of them at any time. Yeah I need to think a little about what I'm doing, but it seems a lot simpler than trying to figure out what R&R is thinking.

I'm glad to hear you managed to get it working - your success is some confirmation at least that we've guessed a bit about what is going on - not quite sure we know what, but at least we are having some success.

I agree with you 100% about them failing to achieve their objective. Its a failing of trying to be too clever - sometimes its best not to assume the user is always a complete idiot, particularly if your documentation is less than perfect. It wouldn't be so bad if they gave a good description of how the product is supposed to work and an outline of the logic it is using - they don't have to give away the crown jewels but the combination of trying to be idiot proof and poor documetation is a bit of a killer, especially when the error messages are totally cryptic.

Bernard

Maybe one of the developers will take a look at this series of posts and give some thought to their approach, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm continually having a similar problem... In my case, the backup progress bar appears to be progressing from 0% to 100%, but then the program ends with the message "The backup did not complete successfully."

FWIW, I've checked the hard disk for errors, and told the system to automatically fix system errors, but that didn't help.

I performed a Base backup about 2 weeks ago, and an incremental backup a day later, but I was unable to get my scheduled backup completed last weekend. I have tried to run unscheduled backups since then to no avail. I keep getting the same error message: "The backup did not complete successfully." Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem is, and I am starting to feel a bit exposed if I encounter any system problems in the near future.

I ran chkdsk once again tonight on both the c: and d: drives with the /f switch toggled (to automatically fix system errors). Then I tried to do an incremental back-up through R&R one more time. Once again, the process failed at the very end, with no explanation or clue about the root cause of the problem. GRRR!!!! :x

While checking the engine.log file for the latest record, I also noticed an rr.log file in the same directory... something I had never noticed before.

Here is an excerpt of the latest backup failure from the rr.log...

Code: Select all

Tue Nov 20 22:27:47 2007 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\tpmdetect.exe /state
Tue Nov 20 22:28:15 2007 RescueRecovery: Loc=40 NoPrimary=0

Tue Nov 20 22:30:53 2007 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe delExclude drive=C: destination="D:\RRbackups" level=1
Tue Nov 20 22:31:17 2007 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe backup level=2 destination="D:\RRbackups" drive=C: location=32 nice=0 pw=1 uuid=0 compress encrypt
Tue Nov 20 23:06:43 2007 RescueRecovery: br_funcs returned error code 0x598
Tue Nov 20 23:06:43 2007 RescueRecovery: Backup failed. Free Space High=0x00000007 Low=0xCDFD8000

While I was waiting for the incremental backup process to finish, and the progress bar was at a full 100%, I noticed the Kaspersky Internet Security icon flashing in the system tray. I'm starting to think that might be the source of my recent problems, since I only installed that program recently.

I'm going to temporarily pause protection on the Kaspersky program and try to run R&R once again. If that solves my problem, then I'll know that I need to add some or all of the programs called out in the rr.log file to the Trusted Zone "exclusions" within Kaspersky Internet Security.

Hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst.... Wish me luck!

Roadster,
I see from your post of Nov 20th 05:17 you were trying to backup the backups, but then in the Nov 20th 11:16 post you seem to have set an exclude for these files.

I had two thoughts - first I wonder whether you have enough space on the drive that it is backing up to? I've had several systems where the free disk space was going down and down to only a few megabytes and it was totally unclear where all the space had gone until I set the system to view hidden operating system files and then I saw all the R&R backups - I guess this is unlikely in your case since I think you have only just started to take backups and you did not mention any space problems - by the way a backup can take 10 -20 GB and an incremental one several gigabytes on a busy system. Also I don't think R&R gave any indication (well, sensible one at least) that it was failing because of lack of space in these cases.

The other thought was whether we are seeing another example of R&R trying to be too clever for its own good and getting itself confused because you are now excluding the backup files from the backup! if you see what I mean. It might be worth thinking about going in and deleting all the backup directories like I mentioned in my original post and starting again with a new base backup - it can't do any harm and it might 'regularise' everything and get it working.

Just a couple of thoughts for what they are worth.
