strange power management behavior

since several days i am observing a strange behavior of the
power/energy manager:

whatever setting/profile i create and choose, once the power manager closes it does remain in the old profile; i can not switch between adaptive, minimal, selfconfigured etc anymore.

i have downloaded and installed the newest version of the manager and the drivers but it doesn't change a thing. this really limits my usage of the thinkpad.

my thinkpad also doesnt want to reboot anymore, i need several attempts of rebooting, battery in and out, before the thinkpads boots properly. mostly its stuck immediately at the beginning of the windows start up, the initial windows startup graphic with the progress bar appears (in low contrast grey), then the computer freezes. (hibernation works fine ... thank god. at least it works now after i had to install the microsoft patch for my 2gb memory.)

before i reformat/reinstall everything i just wanted to post this in this forum, maybe one or more ran into the same problem. (i couldn't find any postings though.)

any ideas? thank you.
