System update updating itself

I have a new T60. I tried to run System Update, just to see what was available. It responded that it first must update itself and to wait for it to restart. Then it goes away and doesn't restart. I tried this a few times. Has anyone seen this?

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forum :)

Do you have IE7?

I have seen that before and I managed to chalk it up to problems with, then in beta, IE7. I, painfully, uninstalled the betas and the problem went away; it should, however, work with the released version of IE7.

Although I never use it, yes it is installed on this computer. I don't suppose it's easy to back it out without damaging something.

Problem solved!

Your mention of IE7 made me think. I went into the Security options for IE7 and enabled everything (there are a lot of options). Apparently System Update uses some kind of Active-X control or script that is disabled by default. Then it worked, and after running it, I reset the defaults in IE, although I only use it when absolutely necessary.

Then, of course, I made the major mistake of letting SU update Access Connections, in the hope that it would correct some minor glitches. On reboot, the system hung at the Windows welcome screen, 'trying to connect'. I finally got into Safe Mode (no easy task, you have to hold F6 long enough to activate it but not long enough to be treated as a stuck key), and uninstalled Access Connections.

Good riddance!
