The LCD (14", 1024x768) of my T60 is quite sensitive to pressure, if I press on it softly from the back on the left hand side, it clearly shows the image distorting (whiter colours - as it happens with cheaper laptops).

However if I press softly on the right it doesn't do it? (If I apply a good bit of pressure on the right, it does it as well - but not as much). Is this normal? Will I start seeing a white area/blemish over the long term e.g. one year? And if so, will Lenovo replace it?

The laptop is carried around in a stuffed college backpack so the machine gets a bit of abuse... hence my purchase of a Thinkpad.

From what I've read on the forum the T60 screen is not supposed to flex... some advice would be great.

Mine does not flex at all, I tried pressing on the back left like you described and even pushing hard causes no distortion of any kind. Pressing in the middle, no distortion either, does not even feel like there is any "give" anywhere on the thing.

Absolutely the same result. No flexure/distortion at all.

Yeah I thought it odd too, T30's and T40's I've seen haven't shown any flexing at all.

It's been like that since date of purchase. If there was some physical damage after it left the factory surely I would be able to see it? Must be a manufacturing defect then - either the cover or the panel must be warped.

I wonder if Lenovo/IBM would respond positively If I call them about this...

The first time this happened to me in a ThinkPad was on the Z60M
But never on my 2 T60's

A related question: If you grab the top two corners of the screen and lightly twist them in opposite directions, do you get flex and color distortion? I do, and I assumed everyone else would naturally too, but I ask because everyone says things like "absolutely no flex" and whatnot.

I grabbed my LCD cover as mentioned above and get zero flex, none. Twisting does not distort the LCD in any way.

I will say that I know what the OP is talking about because my R52 14" does have this, but you'd almost expect that from a different design and price standpoint.

Both the twisting and back-press flex happen on my T40. I have not received my t60p to verify on the t60p. They also happen on an x60 I played with in local bestbuy. But I would say it depends on the pressure. Touching it lightly don't produce flex.

i have som light, very light flex, but the ripple is not the point of pressure but some good 10 cm away in the direcion the fingers pressed, and the effect is not like in dells or toshibas. and that is if i press near the margins (5 cm), on the center, zero flex.

If you press hard enough you can see some "rippling" in the image-- as you describe it, a "whitening" effect. I've seen that in every laptop I've ever owned. There is a small amount of flexibility as a trade-off for weight and thickness. In theory the back could be made totally rigid but it would have to be quite a bit heavier and/or thicker. It's nothing to worry about and it is not permanent. The reason why you don't see it when pressing on the right is probably because that is where the connectors are located behind the screen, and that area is a little more rigid. As for side to side twisting, I would not recommend it. It is a nice demonstration of the fact that glass is flexible but you don't really want to test how flexible it is.

If I press on my T60p I can see some rippling, but not much. If I take the 2 corners and twist then I get ripples and the screen cover(lid) flexes quiet a bit. I think it is normal since the lid is so thin. When I open the screen I usually use 2 hands so it's not a big deal and the laptop is sitting on the desk the whole time so there wouldn't be much flexing in real life use.

I have done this many times & it really depends on the amount of force exerted on the LCD.
