Password Manager - IE versus Firefox

I like the password manager tool, its not perfect - but is any piece of software really? This is the first and only password manager I have used, and thankfully I have avoided keep text files or spreadsheets strewn around with my passwords listed.
In any case, I am an avid Firefox user. Unfortunately I have noticed that in Firefox - the password manager only activated when the user name and password is part of the web page. When you need to authenticate BEFORE entering the web page it never activates. However this is not the case in IE, in IE the password manager activates whether the authentication is on the web page or before accessing the web page.
Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done about this in Mozilla? I refuse to revert back to using IE
Thanks,
Donn
