Hi all,

I bought my T60 (2007) when working in the US last year and used it happily for several months. When I returned to the UK I bought a UK keyboard from IBM UK and fitted it. I then made all the windows changes to correctly map the keyboard and all is well, I get everything in the right place.

However I have noticed one glitch, my windows login password starts with with '4~'. From a cold boot I have to enter the '~' using the WRONG key, actually the key that would have been the '~' key on the US keyboard. From then on after standby or hibernations the UK position of the '~' is correct.

It is as if the windows start up keyboard drivers are preset to the US keyboard layout and the settings I have changed are only the individual user settings

This is pretty frustrating so any clues on how to resolve it would be gratefully received.

Why not just change the password? You should be able to change this from CONTROL PANEL->USERS. I'm not sure of the exact sequence of how to do this but I'm sure it is pretty simple.

Just use a new password that works with the keys you now have on the laptop.

Well the problem is that that password is then used throughout the organisation as network logon and email passwords etc. and would be a pain to change

Thanks anyway, I know it would work but its really a work around rather than a solution.

OK, then change the password temporarily, then rechange it again back to the original PW.

It may be that the PW is mapped to the original keyboard, and by changing it, then changing it back, you could remap it to the current keyboard. I'd reboot in between changes.

I'd be curious to know if this works; I think it has a shot.

Unfortunately I tried that one already and it didnt work.

On investigating this more it seems that XP loads a default user locale before my own locale settings. This is the locale that is used for the logon stuff
