Inconsistent Battery/Power Manager Icons in the Tasktray

I have a T60 2623-D6U that I bought back in June 2006. After having a lot of random issues, I finally got fed up and wiped everything and did a clean install of Win XP Pro. This solved most of my nagging problems except a couple.
I really like the neon green thinkpad power manager gauge that shows the % charge of the battery next to the windows taskbar. However, I find that the little blue windows battery icon in the taskbar is redundant.
My problem is that when I reboot or come out of hibernation, the power manager gauge and the windows icon inconsistently show up (sometimes one, or the other, or both, or neither).
I would just like the PM gauge to always show and the windows one to never show. Here is how i have my options set up...
In Power Manager, Options button at the bottom, "show Power Manager gauge in taskbar" is selected.
In advanced tab of my windows power options properties (accessed from right click desktop, properties, screen saver, power), "always show icon on the taksbar option" is unchecked.
I browsed the forum looking for similar problems, and the only thing i was able to glean was that Power Manager and the windows power management are slightly imperfectly linked.
Is there anyway to fix my issue? Thanks!
