System hangs on "Loading your personal settings"

Right after I swipe my finger and the windows screen says Loading your personal settings my computer hangs for about 60 seconds. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I did a search and saw some people with a similar syptom, but they were all trying to log onto a domain or something work related. I have no domain or DNS to log into, and I still get the problem when I disable the network cards and reboot.

Oh, and it also hangs on shut down when it says Saving personal settings so maybe something about those personal settings?

My guess? The Client Security Software. I do not use it myself, but I have seen some others report that it slows down boot up time somewhat. FYI, you can still use the Fingerprint Reader and not have CSS installed. There is separate Fingerprint Reader software available from Lenovo.

Thanks for the reply, but I already uninstalled CSS. Before uninstalling CSS it took like 5-10 minutes to boot up. After uninstalling it was very fast, but now something's slowing it down at the personal settings spot.

My bet is Access Connections. The latest version works like a virus unless you are among the fortunate. Is the system still slow even when booted up?

Go into task manager (ctrl-alt-delete) and look at which processes are taking up your CPU cycles. AC had my CPU utilization on the T42 at 100%. If this is it, then uninstall it. You could try monkeying around with your communications card drivers then reinstall AC as some have had luck with. If it were me, I'd take AC off for good, and good riddence.

I too just went thru the same situation, and after a lot of investigation and tweaking to no avail, I finally uninstalled Access Connections since I use Windows to manage my wireless. Presto, no more problem! Startups and shutdowns were both 3 times faster. I had a hunch this might be it since before my recent fresh entire system reinstall, I was using Access Connections and I noticed it was very active on startup and shutdown. Even after my fresh reinstall (started totally from scratch using original R&R Recovery Disks, but got the latest IBM/Lenovo software updates), I tried to use Access Connections but it didn't come-up correctly, so decided to uninstall it and the slowdown problem was fixed.

Edit: Now I wonder why exactly it was slowing our systems up? How come lenovo is so content with releasing their programs with such long added delay to windows boot. CSS and AC both add a heck of a long time to boot.

Regarding CSS, I really can't comment since I don't need it and I don't use it.

Regarding Access Connections, I did have an experience something similar to yours about a year and a half ago. An uninstall of the wireless driver software and Access Connections, and subsequent install of updated versions fixed the problem. IIRC, while I was having the problem, I discovered that reenabling the Wireless Zero Configuration service sped the bootup times significantly. After updating the software, I disabled the WZC service again, and the slow bootup times did not return.

The problem I believe is not Access Connections per se, but rather the combination of a botched installation and Windows XP quirks. When XP boots up, it trys to make a network or internet connection. The Wireless Zero Configuration service seems to be smarter as far as determining more quickly that a network connection cannot be made. When Access Connections is in control, it keeps trying to make a network connection even when it is unsuccessful. It will not pass control back to Windows until it eventually times out. These are my theories anyway.

If Access Connections provides no value to you, then by all means leave it uninstalled. If you want Access Connections back, it may just mean that you have to uninstall the Access Connections software and your wireless driver software, then reinstall the wireless driver software and install Access Connections last. In some cases this still does not fix the problem due to orphan registry entries. antera309 has a good post for completely cleaning up these entries.
