Any thoughts on this please?

Erik - Can you / can I please change the Threat Topic. I know this is an old thread that should be reused but the SUBJECT / TOPIC does not do justice :)

the 30" displays only need one dual-link DVI-D cable going to them to push the full 2560x1600.   i think the confusion comes from the "dual-link" part as people interpret that as being two cables.

i've used both a 30" apple cinema display and dell 3008WFP with my former T61p using the advanced mini dock so i know they work.   i didn't like either display as they seemed slow so i ended up with a thinkvision L220x.   samsung has a 30" in the works with S-PVA panel, 1000:1 contrast, 300 cd/m^2, and displayport input due out later this year.   that's what i'll get if i decide to upgrade as it will be just like having a larger version of the L220x.

regarding the thread title, i'm not sure what to change it to so that it's more appropriate.   the info about 30" displays is scattered across the forum and this is one thread of many with answers to the various questions about using them.

Nice. You are the right person to talk to then :). So, all we need are the following:
- T6x with Discrete Video (Any Discrete Video card right?)
- T6x compatible Dock or Adv Mini Dock
- 30" Display
- The cable (no extra video cards needed)

They seemed slow in what way? Response times?
For what application purposes did they seem slow - Office Work, Photo, Video, Gaming, Movies?

So, is it that the new Samsung will have a faster response time? Less Delay?

I think I got the best answers from you already. Is it possible to drive one of these using a X61 Tablet with Ultrabase? Maybe add on some extra video card?

I researched online on Google and only found 4 30" High Res LCDs.
- HP
- Dell
- Apple Cinema
- Samsung

Are there any others in the market? I'd like to find a good deal on any one of them and maybe I can get the Samsung you recommend later next year.

correct.

PVA/S-PVA displays have faster response time compared to IPS.   i'm not a gamer so the input lag wasn't an issue -- it was simply an observation made during testing.

i know nothing about the upcoming samsung 30".   all i know is that it will be what i get if i decide to upgrade from my L220x.   when i get a thinkstation i might just buy a second L220x instead.

none of the current X-series can drive 30" displays as they don't have DVI output (and that includes the ultrabase).

eizo also makes a 30" display but it's about twice as expensive as the rest (albeit twice as functional, too).

Thanks. You are genius and life saver :)
i didn't like either display as they seemed slow
Please elaborate on this a little more.

Also, Any thoughts on Advanced Dock vs Advanced Mindock? What do / would be preferable?

dragging large photos around the screen on the 30" displays seemed slow.   by "large" i'm talking about 100~300MB TIFF/ProPhoto images developed from a 21MP DSLR.   the L220x is definitely faster in this department.

the advanced mini dock is all you need to drive a 30".   the advanced dock can house a third-party graphics card but you need a certain card to work with your specific system.   the card needed varies based on your machine's GPU so i can't answer this question if you asked me.

Whoa! Some professional photography.. Nice. I havent gone down that path yet. Do you supply to Digital Photo Libraries for licensing?

Let me get this right.
- Adv Mini Dock will work
- Adv Dock has ability to add Video Card >> Question can it drive as well without the extra video card? OR It HAS TO HAVE a specific video card based on the GPU?

nah... it's just a hobby right now.   i do get paid once in a while to shoot product photos for clients though.

yes, the advanced mini dock will work.   the card needed in the advanced dock must match the GPU in your T60p/T61p for the drivers to work correctly, plus the card has to be a half-height PCI express card with matching bracket to fit in the dock.

nVidia's specs on their website suggest that the Quadro NVS 140M (T61) would not support the 30" HD full resolution. I says it will support two displays (type not indicated) but only 1600x1200 max digital display.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_nvs ... specs.html

Erik said above that any discreet GPU card will work. Has anyone tried this with the 140M card?

Meanwhile, FYI, for the Quadro FX 570M card (T61p), the site says it will support two panels of up to 3840 x 2400 resolution:

"Dual Dual-Link Digital Display Connectors
Dual dual-link TMDS transmitters support ultra-high-resolution panels (up to 3840 x 2400 @ 24Hz on each panel) --which result in amazing image quality producing detailed photorealistic images.
Available only on Quadro FX 570"

Erik, Antelope - Thanks :).

Erik - We have an argument here from someone. Care to shed some light. Which card / machine did you drive it with? Do you think this holds any water?

Erik ? Now I am confused again.

Hi Erik:

You say "the advanced mini dock is all you need to drive a 30"."
Are you referring to the VGA port or the DVI-D port or both?
Appreciate if you can clarify.

Best
Reddy

crashnburn - please clarify what you are confused about.   you've now confused me.

crg7 - a T60p/T61p with an advanced mini dock will drive a 30" @ 2560x1600 via the dual-link DVI-I port on the dock.

VGA can only drive up to 2048x1536 and therefore cannot drive a 30" at 2560x1600.

hope that helps.

I got past that. I dug up a lot of older threads and those were resolved.
