I had to reinstall windows due to a modem issue (I used Thinkvantage Recovery - worked flawlessly).
After install, I installed all Microsoft/Window updates first (help desk said that was required as some IBM updates will not work correctly without the Windows updates in first), then all IBM updates. I have everything in and up-to-date and no "scanning security chip" comes up, reboot is twice as fast as before & even a new looking screen for the fingerprint sign-in. Kinda strange as before the reinstall I was also completely up-to-date.
Also re: Software Installer vs. System Update, during troubleshooting, one help desk said only use Software Installer, the last one (who was very good) said only use System Update. I asked to clarify both times and really didn't get a clear answer. In any case, I just used System Update this time, and everything worked fine. Previously I used a combination as well as manually installed some updates.
Not being too much of a computer whiz, I was hesitant to do the reinstall, but as I mentioned it was easy to get back to factory setting and now things look and work much better. I also wasn't one for loading much in the way of extra software, just the basics.
I also took the opportunity to delete the "courtesay" Norton & didn't install the Norton Internet Security I had on before, opting for AVG Free which I am so far very pleased with & seems to speed things up over Norton.
Hope that helps.
