Help wanted: replacing 15" T60 LCD rear cover

#1 Post by gator » Tue Jan 16, 2007 11:18 pm

I have some trouble with the latches on my T60 - the left hook doesn't latch simultaneously with the right hook (left side looks slightly off the horizontal compared to the right side). My friend used my laptop for a week or so a while back and now I suspect there is some small warp in the LCD rear cover :( I am never going to trust anyone with my T60 ever again.

I called lenovo regarding this and they sent a tech over, but he did not have any CLUE about replacing the LCD cover. He was kinda inexperienced and I freaked out when he asked me how to remove the screw covers (which I don't know myself).

I told him I'll do it myself and got the replacement parts thinking that I could do it with the HMM, but it looks really complicated now when I see the number of things I have to do. I guess I have to strip the whole LCD panel to parts if I want to replace the rear cover, which I have never done before.

Can someone guide me please? I am kind of scared to do this since I don't want to damage the panel - if anyone can guide me through this, I would be extremelygrateful.

Call Lenovo and tell them to send a well experienced tech!

Otherwise start a complain about this, this is very embarrassing...
You payed for the Onsite Repair Option! Then you should use it!

I just replaced my LCD panel myself (I ruined it myself so it was not covered by warranty). It is a lot of work (took me 1.5 hours for everything) but certainly doable. On how to remove the screw covers: I put little isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) over them, rub a bit so the liquid get in between the screw and the cover and dissolve the glue a bit, then I use a tweezer (anything with a less than 1mm diameter pin front), press it at the edge of the cover and rotate the cover around its center back and forth until you can do this for more than 180 degrees. Now you can use a tweezer to pick it out easily.

However, before you dissemble your Thinkpad, be sure to buy the screws and miscellaneous parts from Lenovo. They are cheap (<6 dollars).

Problem solved: The issue was with the palmrest. I got a new one from IBM after my fingerprint reader stopped working and the laptop is back to normal now - it takes a huge load off my mind; there was nothing wrong with the lid.
