Squeezing as much as possible out of battery

Are there any other tweaks besides using the "maximum battery life" power scheme to really get as much as possible out of a battery?

You can use NHC or RMClock to undervolt the CPU, but with Core 2 Duo CPUs there is only limited range of adjustment available.
If you are running Vista, you can also use a flash memory device ("ReadyBoost") to reduce the amount of disk access.
Oh yes, turn down your screen brightness!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll do some of that now.

You can also do the following things:
1. Set wifi power to be Low in access connections, or switch it off (Fn-F5) if you are not using it.
2. Use NHC and run te HDD in quiet mode; also set to spin down the HDDs when idle.
3. Use LCD at the lowest setting that is comfortable to you.
4. If you are not going to be using the CDRW/DVD/whatever, remove the ultrabay drive (put a travel bezel in its place)
5. Disable IR and Bluetooth.
6. Create a custom power setting with settings to reduce the LCD refresh rate after say, 4-5 mins of no use; turn of hard disk and monitor after say, 10 mins of no use and other settings as you please.
That is all I can think at the moment

Hibernate so that it takes less time to power up the machine. Also, if you put the laptop into standby mode often, remember that the battery still gets discharged fairly quickly in this mode. If you aren't using the laptop for a while, just get it to hibernate.
You can go to Device Manager to disable the IR port.

It wouldn't have been included with my machine?

No, it doesn't come when you buy the laptop. You have to get it seperately. It sells for ~$15 on ebay.
