Comp restarts right after XP loads if not pluged in!? Help

As the title says when ever the computer starts up right after XP loads it restarts. I got a blue screen the first time, but it just restarts with out anywarning every time now.

I had the power options set to power source optimized, though I usually keep it on max performance. I changed it to powersource optimized while I was docked if that means anything.

I have cycled through the power options and not matter which one i selecet the computer restarts a few seconds after loading. TIA for any help you guys can offer.

I'm finding it very hard to follow what you are trying to describe.

In any event, here's what I'd suggest to start:

Go into "my computer" with a right click to open properties. Select advanced, then the startup and recovery tab. Uncheck the box that says "automatically restart" under System Failure.

What this will do is that when you get a bluescreen, the stop error will remain on the screen and you can write it down so that you will be able to figure out what caused it, which the automatic rebooting will obscure.

In addition, I suggest you set your power options to default, at least until you can be sure that nothing else is causing these blue screens. Then you can go back to tinkering with power settings and see if they cause further bluescreens and crashes.

I had a similar problem after installing Vista on my T60p. Running on the battery, it would reboot as soon as the CTRL-ALT-DLT screen would come up. If I plugged in the power adapter it would boot and run fine. I found out that it was the power management drivers got hosed up. Reinstalled the drivers and it worked fine. There is an updated power management driver on the Lenovo site, you might want to give that a try.

What is happening is if the computer is not connected to a power supply it restarts after windows loads for about 15-30 seconds.

I tried what the first post said and now instead of restarting it just hangs at a black screen and does nothing.

I also updated all my thinkvantage software as am still having the problem.

The instructions I gave you were generic instructions that should work with any Windows XP system if the problem is that you are getting a Windows-based "Stop Error." If the screen is in fact "black" and there is nothing written there then I cannot explain it on the basis of a Windows XP crash. And you did say in your first post that you are using XP.

Another thing you might try is to go into the bios when the system boots and set the system back to "system default." After you have changed this have the bios "save changes and exit," and then the system will reboot. If something got terribly amiss in the bios settings perhaps this would explain your problem. Failing that:

It is possible that you have a hardware fault of some sort and my suggestion at this point would be to use your warranty by calling the Lenovo Thinkpad tech support for advice.

I have never even entered the BIOS on my laptop but I will set it back anyways, also it worked normal for a few times when I did nothing but just a while ago it is back to its old ways.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the currently installed Power Management drivers. Reboot. Download and install the latest available power management drivers. Reboot with power adapter still plugged in, log in to Windows and make sure everything is working. Shut Down the laptop, remove power adapter and boot up. See if that works.

For some reason today my laptop would do the black screen just after load EVEN WITH the power supply connected.... So I boot into safe mode uninstall the power manager and on a restart still got the screen.

Well I did another restart after looking around the net (I changed nothing) but it booted up this time. Then I downloaded and installed the newest power manager, and once again back to the black screen with power supply in.

Right now I am running with no power manager, so I guess the BIOS is controlling it. Its not to keen on switching between power supply and non-power supply mode though.

I called IBM customer support and they offered little help, they checked my BIOS (I have the most up to date 1.04) and told me what I have already done.

either you have some weird device driver conflict or a hardware problem. I suspect the latter.

But everything is working so wonderfully with power manager un-installed.

The only complaint I have is I cannot change my profiles on the fly, or swap from AC to Battery with out a restart. (if i want the performance changes to take place.)
