When I leave my computer sit (over night) the screen turns off (as it's supposed to after 30 min), but I can't "wake up" my computer without putting it to sleep, and then pressing the Fn button.

I have it set to not go into standby or hibernate when it's plugged in...the only setting is that the screen should turnoff after 30 min of inactivity...and that does happen. But why can't I 'resume' without putting it to sleep first?

I also occasionally run into that problem. I don't have a great fix, but this is how my notebook is setup:

1. Hibernate is disabled
2. Configured to turn off screen when LCD is closed (not standby)
3. When my screen turns off while the LCD is open and I cannot bring the screen back with my mouse/keyboard, I close the notebook lid and open it back up.

I've found that this turns the screen back on. Inefficient, but better than having to standby and wake. Hope this helps.

Hibernate is disabled, but right now I have it set to go into standby when the LCD is closed - I'd like to keep it like that.

Most of the problems with such problems have to do with bad drivers or BIOS. Turn powersaving options for wireless of and update as necessary (software installer or system update).

I had a similar problem with my screen turning off and staying off. Mine would light back up without putting it to sleep if I hit Fn+Spacebar twice. If you're having the same problem I had there's a Microsoft Hotfix out for it, KB917332. I downloaded the hotfix at http://hf.xable.net. Good luck.

I applied that hotfix a few weeks ago and it seemed to fix the problem, but now it's back! just yesterday I came back to my computer and found a black screen with all the green lights on. I tried several Fn combinations but nothing worked.

could BIOS 2.09 be the culprit? I find it really frustrating that we're still putting up with power mgmt issues on such a high-end machine.

I had this problem even with 2.07 and have not seen it in a while. I can't remember exactly what I did to alleviate the problem, but it was definitely drivers/software since it didn't survive reformatting. I'm a little OCD and reformatted (trying both restore and clean install) a number of times before finally settling on my current configuration (clean install). If I remember what I narrowed it down to, I'll try to let you know. I can't even remember right now whether it only happened on the ThinkPad recovery or if it did happen with a clean install. What I am sure of is that it did happen to me with more than one of my configuration attempts and not just with the default.

On a sort of side note, I wouldn't recommend installing any of the older Logitech software like iTouch and Mouseware (for external keyboards and mice), that really screwed up my computer. I don't think it caused that problem, but if you currently have any of that installed, I would try removing it. I know it caused lots of problems with my touch -pad/-point not working properly, especially after resuming from standby.
