Thinkpad wireless PCI card does't work!!!
Thinkpad wireless PCI card does't work!!!
My new T60 comes with a Thinkpad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter. It can find the network nearby. It can get an IP address. However, I just can't connect to the internet with it. Now my laptop works as a desktop. I've tried different versions of drivers and Thinkpad access connections. Nothing helps.
Does this mean something is wrong with the hardware? Does anyone have the same problem and know how to fix it?
I've heared lots of positive reviews about the Thinkpad card, but it just doesn't work for me.

weird. have you clicked on the pc icon located on windows taskbar and see if it's receiving data packets? It could be the software to blame because can't get a valid DHCP (get an IP address but not operable in the way the router accepts it and grant you access the internet)

If you can get an IP address, can you ping an IP address?
Can you ping 68.48.0.12 for example and get returns?
Can you ping yahoo.com and get returns?
If you can get an IP address and cannot ping, reset the router and try again.
By the way, there are two adapters that come with the Thinkpads, one from Intel and one from Atheros. The Intel card gets uniformly poor reviews, the Atheros card gets good reviews.

It is senting out lots of packets (more than thousand), but just receives a few (less than 10). Looks like everything is fine and the signal is excellent. I thought it might be the software, but I tried the latest driver and some old ones. They just didn't work. Could it be the problem of the antenna? Someone said it may not be installed properly.

oh, I can't ping it. It says 'request timed out'. Also I checked my card and it is a Atheros adapter.redburgundy wrote:If you can get an IP address, can you ping an IP address?

This afternoon I called the lenovo technical service. I waited for 20 mins and finally reached someone. He thought it was the driver and even didn't listen to me. I spent 1 hour following him to download a wireless card driver. It didn't fix the problem. So he just asked me to call them back later.
Thanks, everyone. Thanks for your help. I want to get a firm and stable laptop, so I choose thinkPad. How come it comes with such a weird problem.
They finally sent me a new wireless card. I replaced it by myself. However, everything is still the same. It can connect to the router, get an IP address and the singal is excellent!!!But I still can't surf the internet with the wireless.
Something weird is that it can send lots of packages, but only receive a few (less than 10). Now I think maybe the antenna is not connected very well, but it is built in the screen. It's hard to open it and check. I'm really tired of this.
I bought a laptop, but I can't use the wireless. It's so funny.
Does anyone know what else could be wrong? I will appreciate your help. Thanks.

The most common reason for not receiving any packets over initial 10 or so is security problem with the router.
Does that router use WEP/WPA or anything like that? if yes, then thats what I would recheck first. Routers usually have access logs etc as well.
I would also try to use wireless somewhere else -- friends place, internet cafe something like that.
Also, please specify WHAT ip address do you get when trying to connect? 169.254.*.* is common on those cases -- being windows-assigned IP when real connection is not available.

I think the router should be OK. My roommate is using the same router and his laptop works well with the wireless. Also some other friends can easily connect to the internet with their laptops in my place.
I have taken my T60 to my school and also some friends place. Just the same thing. It never worked.
It can get a real IP address. 192.168.1.*. These are things that make me crazy. Everything looks fine, but the fact is it doesn't work.
