T60p memory upgrade problem

Hey all. I am upgrading my 2623 d8u from 1GB to 2GB. I cannot get the thing to boot after the upgrade. It hangs about 20 sec after booting windows and also will not let me in the BIOS. The system seems fine with only the upgrade, but not both modules.
The memory is from Crucial and is PC5300.
Lenovo tech support tells me the memory is not the same speed? If I run CPU-Z, it reports them both at the same speed (independently).
Ok, so what gives? I find it hard to believe that Crucial sent me the wrong module, and it seems ok all by itself. Is this T60p that touchy about memory? I had a similar problem with my T40 and never got it resolved.
Thanks in advance.

So the old stick alone works fine, the new stick alone also fine, but the laptop can't boot if you have both installed, right? Are you sure that both slots work fine? Have you run Memtest86?

They can both be PC2-5300 and still be different speeds.
Using CPU-Z, make sure the memory timings (CL, TRAS, etc) all match up.
Also, if you haven't, update your BIOS. Sometimes memory compatibility is improved with BIOS updates.

Timings are both 5-5-5-15-21
I am running the 2.09 BIOS.
I find it hard to believe that it will work on each stick alone, but not both. The sytem will boot halfway into windows and then hang.
I wonder if something is screwed up with the new BIOS?
Anyone else having problems running 2 sticks of memory on a T60p with 2.09 BIOS?

I also bought another 1Gig Stick over ebay. but I made sure that it is also a Samsung, with the same model number as the Lenovo stock version. You get the same module which Lenovo puts in for just USD 80.
Mine work both and they are in dual channel mode.
Bought this one:

My original Samsung Stick had also this model number, look at your module and search in ebay for it, sellers type it sometimes into product description: M470T2953CZ3-CE6
I have read in some various boards that a mixture of different rams should be avoided because there is a lot of factors different beside the timings.

That's a very cautious approach and is what I almost always do, too.

I do the same thing and have so far found the memory to range in price from ~$85 to $125 in price.
FWIW I'm running several T60p's with matched 1Gb modules with no issues to date. We did however have one that showed up direct from Lenovo with 2Gb from the factory that exhibited several boot problems. It went back immediately and was replaced. No problems with the rplcmnt.
