Hello.
Just a question.
What are some common things I can do to increase performence of my laptop, i noticed that its starts up so slow, much slower than my desktop (athlon xp 1.8ghz, 1gb ram)
Also, is it possible to turn off any devices that i do not use, for example the wired lan, 56k modem, etc...
or any general tweaks / goodies to make me even happier with it?

If you dont use it, then turning of the client security software and the fingerprint reader will speed things up at startup.
If you use the scrollpoint, then turning off the touchpad gets you (very slightly) longer battery life.
If you really want to get serious then I suppose you could go into the BIOS and start disabling the things you dont use, but I personally would not recommend this.

To make it boot faster you need to kinda know what you are doing and go into start>run msconfig...if you don't know what you're doing in there, don't mess with it because you could bugger something up.
A 7200rpm hard drive would help.

ive checked the msconfig and removed any junk.
i find it very odd that my laptop is so much slower than my desktop, especially since this desktop hasnt been formatted in years

The only factor at work here is the Hard Drive and software that's loading. Also, did you do a defrag? After the initial setup of putting your own software on and all that, a computer needs to be defragmented.

How slow is slow? How long from power-on to login, and login to desktop ready?

Good point, "slow" is subjective. For comparison, it takes my T60 (1.66GHz Core Duo, 1.5GB PC2-5300 RAM, 5400rpm 80GB HDD)
39 seconds from power-on to the login screen.

power on to login:
66 seconds
login to time programs load:
18 seconds
It has been formatted and fresh copy of windows xp pro about a week ago
installed office matlab, photoshop, and a few other apps and then i did a defrag about 3 days ago.
