Hmm, it's more complicated than I thought. Well, if the $1,699 model entitles you to both XP and Vista, then it's a no-brainer: get it! The other one is more expensive, and you wouldn't have the option to downgrade to XP. I personally also prefer the $1,699 model's 6-cell battery, because the widescreen T60 is quite heavy.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I agree with pianowizard but I can't let orca3000 off that easy. If you choose the $1,699 model you give up the ATI Mobility FireGL V5250 card for the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card if that matters to you.

Sorry, the devil made me do it

I know what you are going through trying to make a decision, I have almost pulled the trigger on the 8744C9U several times but still have it in my mind that maybe I should wait for Santa Rosa. Why does making a decision on which Thinkpad have to be so difficult?

I can't let you off that easy. ;) The X1400 will give you more battery life and less fan activity, so I'd say that the 8744-5BU is 8744-5BUthe best option here -- at least in my opinion!

That reminds me that the OP did say s/he preferred getting a 9-cell to a 6-cell battery, implying battery life is important to him/her. Tom, I think you won this debate!

Hopefully at the end of the day the OP is the winner -- the happy owner of a spanking new T60.

And another thinkpads.com member from southern Ontario ... :)

Well, My pragmatic side won the fight. 87445BU ordered. By the way, 9-cell battery upgrade only cost $90 at the moment at vsiaperks.ca

Congrats! I figured your pricing was through visaperks -- definitely the best pricing available north of the border (bar EPP).

Well, that good old visa is still handy.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.
