New Thinkpad Owner...have Questions..

hi all:
I am a proud owner of a T60. Just got delivered this afternoon ( on time inspite of "issues beyond UPS control" - so thats a Yippie!!)
Now the questions before I start to load my development software on it.
1. I had ordered XP Pro. but here is no XP Pro CD for future insallation
2. No recovery or back up CD whatsoever.
I was a bit disappointed. Is this normal?
If so - can someone more experienced here tell me about "restoration" if I ever required..?
Does the "back up" take care of this...?
3. and then how do I partition the C drive. Its 80+ gb and would love to have it split.
Appreciate any advice..

1&2, run the Thinkvantage software (blue button at the top of the screen) and you can build your recovery CD/DVD set from there.
3. I recommend Acronis for re-partitioning your drive

1&2. Indeed, no CDs are included. Use ThinkVantage Access (I think!) > Create Recovery Disks to make a set of CDs should you ever need to reinstall from scratch. You'll probably need 6-8 blank CDs.
If you want to split up an existing partition, you'll need something like Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director. Me, I used to do this splitting thing, but in the end I found it was more trouble than it's worth, so it's all one partition for me now ...

Tom, Ron thanks much for the quick pointers. After I have my recovery CDs and partition.. I might be back with more questions.
well - another immediate Q
Power Manager ==> Battery Maintenance
what should I set Thresholds to so as to have a long and prosperous battery life..?

I recall the recommended threshold was somewhere around 90%, but you'll find more answers if you search the forums.
My X31's old-style power management doesn't do thresholds, but after two years and 750 cycles I'm still at 65% of original capacity, so the exact threshold setting is probably not critical!

I agree with you. However, many people have the superstition that it's bad to keep the battery constantly fully charged, and they got me paranoid too, so my T60's battery is set to start charging at 70% and stop charging when it reaches 90%.

It's surely no bad thing, but the benefit is probably not huge. My X31 is plugged in all the time, except when I'm running on batteries. And it's probably powered on 150+ hours per week ...

I am kinda paranoid too. But keeping things charged up is a very good thing, you never know when you'll gonna need it.
