The issue is twofold: Performance/Price - but not what you think.
i can get more processor speed(2.16), more HDD space, but slower HDD (5400) or go with faster HDD(7200), less space and slower processor (2.0), but pay $300 more for it?
Does a $300 premium for faster HDD, but slower processor make since?
Its just the way the two machines have been configured. The faster processor machine is a pre configured T60 where as the other is custom config.

You will likely not notice the increased HD speed or the slower processor speed. Save the money, buy your SO some nice Valentine gift.

Not at all. If you look up 120GB 5400rpm and 100GB 7200rpm HDDs on Newegg, you'll see that the latter is only about $30 more expensive. Get the cheaper model.

Why not put the $300 towards a 7200rpm hard drive. Then you will have 2 hard drives. One and a spare for about the same money as well as a faster processor @ 2.16.

like everyone else is saying - go with the cheaper model. you can upgrade the hd yourself later for much cheaper.

thanks everyone - All good comments.
I had been leaning towards the faster HDD, but it seems like that is not such a huge performance advantage. I had thought that was one of the biggies(HD speed, Sys Ram, Video Ram). I hate slow boot ups, slow loading of apps and slow screen refresh. I'll just keep the slower drive defragmented.
Now the trick will be to see if they can add anything to the cheaper preconfigured t60 like the N card I want. She did add the WWan card so maybe so although I noticed this is the 2007 model vs the 2613-cto which has 3 antennas.
