T60 is better than MacBook

First, I apologize my english is terrible

I sold my MacBook and I bought a new T60, 2007-FUG.

This T60 is better than MacBook and I like my T60, but the fan noise is terrible! I tried to read all the topics about Fan speed control but
I still dont know how I can adjust my T60's fans run example 1500rpm all the time?

I use now tpfancontrol, but i think it is not answer to my problem, because fans still turn off / on. And I don't like that my T60 is running very hot before fans turn on.

Have you looked here?

Do you have any specific reasons for thinking the T60 is better than the MBP? I'm just curious since I almost purchsed one recently, but decided against it.

Tervetuloa! Ja englanninkielentaitosi ei todellakaan vaadi mitään anteeksipyyntöjä! :)

My father recently bought a 1951-FDG -- a Core 2 Duo, which should run a little hotter than a Core Duo, but with the integrated graphics. His T60's fan runs from time to time, but at ~2900 rpm it's still very quiet. I don't know whether T60s with discrete graphics might have a different fan design, though? They do certainly generate more heat.

What speed is your fan running at? (I don't think it's possible to get it down to 1500 rpm, though, at least not without some hardware mods!)

My T60's fan also turns on quite often but isn't too loud, especially when compared with my T43's.

@ better than macbook: no d'uh! :D

seriously though, all I'm doing now is web browsing, and my fan is 3000RPM when it goes on, and my GPU (V5250) is at 65C

My fan runs about 3000rpm when it's on. I have ATI X1400 graphic card, and the GPU temperature is always only one Celcius hotter than CPU temperature. CPU and GPU temperatures are about 47C-55C, and after 55C fan turn on and stop when temperature is 47C. And when fan is on it sounds like someone is whistling, i don't like that.

So I don't think that X1400 is the problem. But I think that fan can cool enough even if it spins about 1500-2000rpm all the time.

And why T60 is better than MacBook.
I bought my MacBook last autumn, and after that I had three broken MacBook. There was so much Hardware problems that I can't believe how it is possible.
After five repairs and one DOA(dead on arrival) laptop Apple send me my fourth macBook two weeks ago. I didn't even open the box I sold it immediately.

Every time when I see white plastic or "aluminium" with apple logo I dont know laugh or cry.

I wonder if it really is a different fan -- on the 1951-FDG, it was a gentle whoosh, definitely no whistling sound.

Unless ... listening to your fan, could it be a bad fan bearing, or maybe a fan blade making contact with the frame?

I also think the T60 is superior to the MacBook - I have not regretted the sale of my Mac for one moment.

Above all else, the T60 is COOL compared to the MacBook, which ran very warm.

I must say, I never hear the fans on my T60.

Gentlemen, I beg to differ. I've retired my T60, although I still have it, and am now using a Macbook Pro. I can surf the net without the inconvenience of a spyware or anti-virus program slowing me down, and when I need to use Windows, Parallels allows me to run Windows better than my T60 did.

Boots in less than 15 seconds, my T60 took 90, no lockups to speak of, and I can backup the whole thing - lock, stock, and barrel, just by copying the Parallels XP files.

And I really thought I'd miss the trackpoint on the T60, but Apple two-finger scrolling is just too convenient and simple. I never thought I'd be using an Apple after using Windows PC's for over 20 years.

The real clincher is when you try to do something like print photos out of a T60 using a program like Ulead Photo Explorer, then do the same thing in iPhoto. My T60 locked up twice and Ulead is an excellent program. iPhoto streams the data out in 1/4 the time and doesn't slow down the rest of the computer while it's doing it.

So now I do my web surfing and photo editing in OS X and all my software development in XP. Unbelievable!

I agree, compared to the Macbook, you get a far superior product.

I find the hardrive to be louder than the fan most of the time, though then again I run with maximum battery lifetime + max screen brightness mode.

You are not differing with anyone. People have been talking about the MacBook, which is inferior to the MacBook Pro. I have played with both the 15" and the 17" MacBook Pro's and they are amazingly well built. I was less impressed by the 13" MacBook.

I had 2 MBP DOA´s and gave up on Apple, previous to the [censored] MBP´s I had a broken Powerbook 12" and 4 DOA iMacs...to me Apple is a joke. However OSX is great.

I´m now on my T60 and I absolutely LOVE it. Its sturdy, well built, nice looking, fast and cool.

My situation with Apple was very VERY similar. Numerous bad MBPs, 2 bad MBs and 2 bad iMacs (G5 and CoreDuo). I gave up as well but I do miss OSX. It is too bad you can't run it on hardware that is actually reliable. A reliable OS is worth nothing if the hardware is bad.

I am about to take delivery of a 3rd ThinkPad since 1998, started with a 600 model, got a T23 4.5 years ago, and hopefully the T60 will be delivered on Tuesday.

The TP 600 worked just fine for 4 years, had minor cosmetic issue with the rubberized surface which IBM replaced, but it worked fine otherwise, although it did die 2 years later while my parents were using it (the system board crapped out).

The T23 has been no problem at all other than the battery going south in 2 years time, which is not unexpected.

In comparison to a friend who bought an iMac a little over two years ago, her computer started acting up with a washed out / fading monitor within 2 months of purchase, numerous service calls later it was finally traced to a power supply problem, she also just called last week to say that the iMac won't boot up now and was hoping it's not the hard drive, else she would have lost a lot of her work since the last back-up.

She does like the OS and software on the iMac, but as the previous poster says, none of that matters if the hardware fails.....

Back to the point of the OP, I'm guessing that Loaded runs his T60 on AC most of the time. Modify the power settings to run the CPU on "adaptive" instead of "highest" when on AC and the fan noise should get better, particularly when the battery is fully charged.

In my tests, there was no performance hit from running the CPU in adaptive and in most cases will reduce the CPU heat significantly.

T23>Macbook>T60>Macbookpro>T60p....... in my eyes

I have a macbook G3 which was my work horse for many years. Great design simple to use OSX has some issues for the common Windows user but it is a simple machine to operate after the learning curve. It reminds me of speaking english as your native language and translating it to spanish in your head before you speak. I graduated to the Macbook Pro 15. Again excellent product but not a business machine. To tell you the truth around the coffee shop -- great style. In a meeting... embarrasing. Picked up a T23 (used) had some issues with the mobo - sold it for cost and went for the T60p 15 flex. Screen blows any mac away except the Cinema HD Display which is flawless.

I use the T60p for all photo and video editing coupled with Dell 24" LCD in expanded desktop mode so I can use both the laptop display the external for maximum screen estate.

I sold the Macbook Pro for the purchase of the T60p. I never looked back.

Now is a good cue for mobility -- in search of x60s ultralight for day to day business and law school.

Well this is interesting. My Macbook has just been sold because my 3 year old T42P was more satisfying to use. I noticed I preferred my old computer to my new one so the Mac is gone. I was hoping I'd fall in love with OS X but it just didn't work out. I was lucky with mine as it had no problems. However, it was still uncomfortable to use, burning my leg at times. Now I'm just waiting for Santa Rosa and hopefully upgraded graphics options.

BTW: My girlfriend's Macbook has been in and out of Applecare 4 times. They take about 4-5 days to fix something.
