New T60 with Vista B32 extremely slow

I am in big trouble... I've recommended a T60 IBM instead of HP to a friend. So far, I've been more than impressed with my X60s and T43p.

T60 of my friend (core 2 duo, 2ghz, 1gb ram, 120 GB hdd, 1680*1050) is painfully slow. Is that due to Vista or could it be a problem of hardware. The HDD led keeps flashing and is turned on for about 5-6 minutes on system boot. putting laptop to standby mode drains 50% of battery life until morning. My X60s drains about 7% ?!

What are your recommendations and "tasks" I should perform on his computer to achieve at least a bit better performance.

The model number is:

Go to the following page and download ThinkVantage System Update. Run System Update and install the appropriate updates. I would not update everything though. I would not install Client Security Solution unless you really need it. The same with Rescue and Recovery, and System Migration Assistant. You should take the time to read what the update is for, so you do not install something that will not help you. After running System Update, check on the same page below to see if there are any other updates you might need. Follow the installation instructions in the .txt files for each update you want to install. Verify that any updates you are downloading are for the correct operating system (which I believe you said is Vista).
