Warranty Issue

#1 Post by On The Rocks » Tue Feb 20, 2007 8:06 am

I am in the process of ordering the following online through lenovo US.

T60p 2613 CTO
T7200
2 GB Ram
ATI Mobility Fire GL V5250
100 GB, 7200 RPM HDD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
14.1" SXGA + TFT
Thinkpad 11a/b/g Wi-fi wireless
Fingerprint Reader
9 cell battery
XP Professional
Office Basic

Now here is the issue.

I currently live in China. Have come home for 2 months and will purchase my unit in the states. The problem is the international warranty is only for North America and select other countries the closest being Japan.

I will be staying in China, without leaving, for another 3 years. To pack up and ship out my T60p in case of a problem just does not seem like a viable option.

So my question is am I missing something?

Is there some way to get a proper international warranty that will allow me to have my unit fixed in Hong kong if something happens?

Or am I really worrying about nothing? What I mean by this is is it that common to have to return a T60p notebook for service?

As well is it that expensive if I were just to pay for it myself for work done for your basic common problems?

This is my first notebook ever and so I decided to go with the best. I am hoping the reputation the Thinkpad line has is all that and more. I can't wait to get it.

Yes, Don't order online. Call up Lenovo and talk to a sales person who will get you the proper service contract. You may even get a better price then online.

First I configured online to see what I was looking at roughly then I did call them up directly and have been talking to a rep. He seems very nice and wants to help but for what I want he cannot get me a warranty for Hong Kong or China.

So..... this goes back to my questions above......

Basically it depends on the model you select.

For instance, for a T60p, the serie 2007 does cover China in its warranty : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 007&iws=on

But the 1953, does not : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 953&iws=on

Thank You astpaul. The unit I am purchasing is 2613CTO. It is covered in Japan but not China or Hong Kong.

I don't understand why one model is covered in one place but not another. I onbviously don't have the full picture but my limited knowledge would think that a T60(p) with international warranty should be covered internationally and not in select places for select models.

In other words if one model is able to be warranties in one place they all should be.

Oh well my bad luck.

Thanks Again

You don't get it :)

For the same characteristics you will find 2 series most of the time.

You should get the TABook and find out what are the closest model you need within the Serie that gives you the warranty you need.

Should be a no brainer.

The series of your T60p is almost the same to mine and we also have exactly the same situation. Furthermore, I have envisaged a warranty problem.(hope you won't)
First of all, If you get the series number of 2613, unfortunately, your T60p cannot be in its warranty in China(include Taiwan, HongKong and outback) under any circumstance. In fact, this type(2613) has a limited warranty in following four countries, USA, Japan, Canada and Korea. I'm very sure of it because I have called Lenovo's 800 service in China to double check it. And I also heard about from Lenovo's 800 that the reason why some series' warranty are limited in some specified countries is that not any series is available in all the countries. Therefore, if you ask warranty from Lenovo for your ThinkPad in China, they will tell you that they have no abilities to repair your computer.

Secondly, it does not mean that your warranty could easily take effects even if your series is 2007 or some other series whose warranty can cover more countries include China. However, there is a way to achieve it. If you bought your T60p on lenove.com/us/ and plan to use it in China, you need to reserve your Invoice and report your T60p to your customs when you ship or take it to China. Then you need to pay the import tax which is the 17% of the total price on your Invoice. That is not the end. You also need to prove that the computer exactly comes from America. A friend of mine, a Chinese, just done all the things above and got his precious warranty.

If you are in China, you can simply call the Lenovo 800 service, but you would not get the same price as in USA. Your 2613CTO's price in China is more than RMB30000 which equal $3800 dollars or more. That is why so many Chinese prefer to buy their ThinkPad in United States.

PS. I'm in China now and if you have any problem, I'd like to help you.
