It is current. That was one of the first things I checked.
Maybe it's too current :?

I just booted 2h35m ago.
My CPU1 is 93°C and CPU2 is 91°C.
That's too high, correct? :?

o1sowise...I also Run BOINC, my 2623 DDU's temps are as follows,
without BOINC running, CPU0 58c, CPU1 58c. With BOINC running on both CPU's, CPU0 90c, CPU1 91c. I have never had my T60p shutdown, it is on 24/7.

I have a 6 month old T60P, that is experiencing similar symptoms. Mine is putting itself to sleep and sometimes crashing in the middle of me browsing and watching TV on the laptop. It too happens at night, although that is when I use the computer for extended periods. It sometimes takes a couple of power cycles, it will hang during boot and won't proceed without me turning it off again. I'm wondering if it's a heat issue?

It's always on my lap or sometimes on a small pillow. I know these are probably the worst spots for keeping a laptop cool, but It doesn't seem like I should be running the system very hard to generate too much heat. I'm not running the software that you are describing. The problem started about 1 month ago and has been an ongoing problem, maybe every 2-3 days or so.

Interesting. :!:
Which BIOS level are you running? :?:
I'm on the latest: :?

BIOS Version/Date (1.09a), 7/27/2006

Just tonight I had the laptop sitting on the coffee table with no apps running and not plugged in. I come back an hour later and the display is totally black. Nothing I push can turn the diplay back on. The green LED status lights show wireless radio signal, battery power and I assume the power on indicator. I had to power cycle to get running again, this time I know the laptop wasn't hot.

I see that the Lenovo BIOS update has a much newer version, I'm willing to give that a shot...but it sounds like we are experiencing similar problems.

Had similar problems, turned out that Windows and IBM/Lenovo components that managed power options were to blame, somehow they both put the laptop in power-save mode but couldn't decide among themselves who's gonna wake it up. Disabled all but Windows one, worked flawlessly so far. This is on WinXP SP2.

How did you do that?

I was sitting at my PC yesterday, typing while on a conf call, when the frackin PC just turned itself off. Right there in front of me.

Sooo, I downloaded and installed the new BIOS (2.11). I figured, how bad could it get. :(

This morning, I find the PC in stand-by mode.

Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Today, my T60p decided to:
  • power off in front of me, while I was typing
  • go into Stand-by,in front of me, while I was typing
  • hang, in front of me, while I was typing
I called 800-IBM-SERV and they immediately asked me about my Power Management driver level and Power Management level. They seemed satisfied with my currency. Then they had me boot to check two things in the BIOS:
  1. Config --> Power --> Adaptive Thermal Management. Under this, they had me change the battery setting to "Max Performance" (the AC setting was already "Max Performance")
  2. F10 to save and exit
  3. Again in BIOS setup, the very last option is HDD Diag program. That ran for about an hour and found an error so severe, a big red error message appeared, said something like "Severe error found, call Support"
  4. I called support back and they are sending me a new hard drive (should be here by Monday), and a set of recovery CDs
I'll keep you all posted if the power settings do anything...

Sat 7:30am update: When I came down to my office this morning, it was suspended.
I was able to resume and although it was slow, it did run.

Sat 9:50am update: It just powered itself off, right in front of me. But, before it went down, I saw three baloon messages from Ghost, saying it was unable to connect. Now, more than ever, I suspect Power Management. I just removed IBM/Lenovo power management. Wish me luck! :(

Mon morning update: Well, it was not Thinkpad Power Management. It suspended once and powered off once on Sunday, even without the Thinkpad Power Management installed. I've reinstalled Power Management and am awaiting my new hdd.

btw - Ghost does not seem to like the hdd anymore. I cannot get any error free backups anymore...

Mine is acting really weird also. I can get it to crash by moving around Google Earth a bunch. Sometimes it will go to sleep other times it completely goes black and shuts off. I also heard a very high pitched beep on two occasions right before it went black. And now my battery is not charging even though it shows as being on AC power. I upgraded to the latest BIOS and tried disabling the ThinkVantage power management. Still having problems, I am crashing so much it is driving me crazy.

I finally was able to take a few hours off and move data from my old HDD to my replacement HDD. It was looking good, until I came downstairs this morning and found it powered-off. A few hours later, it powered-off while I was typing. So that makes two today. :x

I called 800-IBM-SERV and opened a new problem. I'm sending my T60p off to the depot tomorrow. Hopefully it will be fixed while I'm on vacation for a week.

Wish me luck!

mine started behaving badly today. Turned off 3-4 times while watching some quicktime vids and using lightroom. I suspect it's a heat issue. I had it on an advanced mini dock when those happened. Any luck?

Well, since I last posted, they replaced my planner/system board - the problem remained.

Just yesterday, they replaced both memory DIMMs - the problem remains.

I'm running out of ideas what to replace next... :? :?: :?

I have a suggestion for you, if you haven't tried it then give it a shot. Get a Live CD of any linux distro and boot from it, if the problem persists then a man of science like me will believe your office is haunted.

Also time your system temperature regularly.

I believe I've found the problem! :D

In the BIOS, in Power settings, there's an option called Adaptive Thermal.
I had that set to Max Performance.
Two days ago, I changed it to Balanced.

So far, I've been up for 1 day 19 hours 43 minutes.
My CPU temps are steady at 68 degrees C. :)

Before changing this parameter, my temps were in the high 90's  and I was failing regularly (many times each day).

Edit: Also, you should make sure the Thinkvantage Power Manager settings also say Balanced

slightly unrelated but my t41, for some reason at 8am always goes to standby on its own even though its not idle. the way i got around that was taking off hibernate and its been on for a week at a time and not shut itself down.

i have no idea why hibernate being turned on is making my machine goto standby but that seems to be the root of my problem.

Steady at 68 C? That is little high. What applications are you running?

I know it's high. This is because I'm running BOINC all the time.

Strange. I changed this setting for mine to 'Balanced' and Windows XP hung at the first display screen every time I tried to boot. So now I've had to keep it set to 'Max Performance' even though my machine runs pretty hot (idle GPU 75-77 C, 3d app 100-107 C).

I know the BIOS Power settings and the Windows Power settings and the ThinkVantage Power Manager settings, sometimes do not play well together...

Is ridiculous that high-end Thinkpads reach such a high temperatures. I wonder if anyone has taken the step to replace the thermal compound on the GPU like to Arctic Silver 5. Maybe Lenovo is using low performance thermal grease?

There's a thread about heat already, http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 934#282934

From what's in there, it looked like they were using some kind of thermal pads rather than grease. The people who voided their warranties and changed to using AS5 had much lower temps.
