t60 most likely stolen, what to do?-it wasn't!!!!
so, i can buy one for ~400usd, dont know the specifications, but the guy i know he lives in a not that orthodox neighbourhood of zurich.
i bought from him once a laptop, it came with bill warranty, excellent, he was in need of money.
now he told me he has a t60, he said same story (which starts to get rusty) that he's in financial pb, and he has a t60 for ~400usd, but this time he has no bill....
what shall i do?
thinkpads are unique machines, easy to locate if needed, still the deal is excellent, and i know smbd else will do it if i won't....my heart desires the forbidden fruit....

My policy is to not buy anything that I suspect might be HOT (stolen). Do not support thievery.
The owner should be able to supply a paper trail of where they purchased the T60 - whether from a retailer or a third party. If not, this would tend to indicate that even if they didn't personally steal the ThinkPad, they might still be fencing stolen merchandise. Do not support this.

No Bill/Invoice = Don\'t buy...
Don\'t be greedy!!! *No offence, sorry*
Report to the relevant authorities if you smell something is going wrong. Without invoice or bill, no one will believe your words if your thinkpad T60 has problems and need replacements from IBM/Lenovo. You need to produce the invoice as proof/evidence to IBM.

I agree that it's almost certainly stolen, but ask the seller for the serial number anyway. Two ways to find the serial number: on the bottom of the laptop, and within the BIOS. Tell him that you'd like to use it to look up info regarding the laptop's history. If he gets scared, then you know for sure it's stolen, and you should stop feeling tempted to buy it. On the other hand, if he doesn't mind providing the number, then perhaps he really is just desperate to solve his financial problems, and you should continue to be tempted.

i did that when i was at his place, checked online, still under warranty till 2008sept
what i was thinking to do is to call ibm swiss and to ask them if it is registered to him. whenever i call them they ask me if i live where i live, they know it, they have the data.
if it matches yuhui, but what if it doesnt, i will know someone has a stolen lappy...they will want to escalate...he's not my body not my enemy, still posesion of stolen property is very nice described in the penal code...do i want to get involved?
monday i call ibm!!!!

I had a T42 stolen once so I would NEVER buy a laptop I suspected was stolen. If this guy is selling stolen goods then he deserves to be found out and arrested. If you find the laptop to be stolen then by all means turn his butt in!

Re: t60 most likely stolen, what to do?
Can't you ask him directly/indirectly if it's stolen or not?dorin wrote:now he told me he has a t60, he said same story (which starts to get rusty) that he's in financial pb, and he has a t60 for ~400usd, but this time he has no bill....
I suggest you don't get involved.dorin wrote:do i want to get involved?

I agree. If you can be 100% sure that the laptop is stolen and provided you won't get into trouble later on, file a report. Never know, this might just be a tip of the iceberg and he may be associated with people doing this fulltime.Chrispy wrote:I had a T42 stolen once so I would NEVER buy a laptop I suspected was stolen. Just because it's registered under his name doesn't necessarily mean he obtained it legally. Perhaps the original owner forgot to register. I still think there was something fishy about this laptop, considering that he was willing to sell it for $350US. Maybe it was stolen, maybe it has technical problems, etc. I wouldn't feel too bad about missing the opportunity to buy it.dorin wrote:so, i just talked to ibm swiss, told them the story, the laptop is registered under his name, since last year.

Re: Stolen Laptop
Report it to Lenovo with the serial number. If it ever gets sent in for service they will confiscate it.nofuture wrote:My IBM T60p laptop got stolen recently. What you could advice i should do in order to make it unusable or to track it .

or you could concider computrace lojack for next laptop
they dont sell it in europe, but can be purchased from us. they dont provide the same chances to recover it, but 100usd for 4 yrs, its worth the investment.
or, if you have a nice insurance agent, get it insured, that's what i did. for the 30d with 24-70L and 70-200 1.8 L plus the x40 i pay ~130usd per year. given the fact that someone for ex would steal my crumpler with everything inside its a nice investment to protect several thousand usd value
