i am so tired of the fan noise on my t60p, blowing cold and semi hot air out nonstop at 3000 rpm or so. ive messed with this BUG ever since i got the notebook, 6-7 month ago and im tired trying to fix their work with tpfancontrol, nhc and all kinds of third party software, which isent fixing it anyway unless you cant hear the fan at 3k rpm...

every other low budget notebook i ever come by, wether it be a fujitsu, acer, dell or hp, they are is running 10 times more quiet. i got my parrents a fujitsu siemens, i swear i cant tell if the notebook is on or not and its a 2.13 PD with x700 and always on AC.

anyway, im gonna get a cheap and silent notebook. This PC, both price and noise, fits more in a server room.

With tpfancontrol and a high threshold, the fan should stop. Did that not work for you?

Fan in my X60s is noiser than the one in T42 here. I worked around it by not starting than fan until cpu reaches 54'C.

My T0 fan turns on at about 45C and keeps going even if the temp. drops to ~42C (which is the normal temperature, btw). the speed hovers between 3000 rpm as you mention, but I normally don't hear it unless I am in a very silent room without airconditioner noise. I know fan noise is a very subjective issue, but I'd like to mention that I am not 'fan noise deaf'. My T60's fan does not bother me because it is not noisy - it does turn on and off and sometimes keeps going even at 42C, but I will NOT call it noisy. I was initially keeping tabs on fan speed using the thinkpad fan utility, but I stopped long back and I really don't think about it now.

Sometimes the fan does turn on when the laptop is not doing anything at all or during light browsing activity and keeps running in the background. I say 'So what?' and get on with my work. At least till today, I haven't been bothered by the noise so much that I had to stop working and attend to it.

Core duo and core 2 duo laptops do run hotter than the previous generation processors. The trade off we get in performance is much bigger compared to the increase in thermal output, and that is why we use it. I see people buying Dells all around here (and while I must say that I do like the recent e1405 and e1505 models much much better compared to the earlier inspiron models), they are atleast as hot as thinkpads (!?) if not hotter.

If your machine is running really hot, get it repaired - either the fan or the motherboard. If it is within limits, let the fan run and enjoy the machine

im not gonna send it back becuase ill just get it back again with a note "working as intended". and im in denmark and the pc is bought in germany so not too happy about sending it back when this problem is the same on em all.

tpfancontrol and nhc dosent work on vista and this is not about random third party software, but rather about lenovo and thinkpad. this is probably the most ekspensive notebook in the world and still it only has 3 static fan speed. its just not good enough.

i have an old shuttle from god knows when, and it has liniar speed control. i can configure the exact RPM for every x% the heat is increased. thinkpad fancontrol is completly outdated. my t60p might be silent when i turn it on and for about 10 minutes, after that it never go below 2900/3300 RPM.

about lenovo power control, there is an option regarding the ven control. when this option is high it seems to allow more heat before increasing fan speed, however, it dosent look like its possible to lower overall cpu/system performance AND allow more heat at the same time...

is there any working heat monitor for thinkpad and vista?

ML900? Toughbook CF19? CF30? And those are garden-variety, off-the-shelf units.

Sorry to hear of your problem. You should know that what you describe is definitely not common to all machines. T60p units (with what Lenovo calls the "discrete" fans) are very quiet even when the fans run at maximum speed (which they don't do often).

Fans on the T60/p units are quieter than any fans on the T40 series. I don't know what machine type you have, but I can tell you from using many such machines that for units with fast processors (>2GHz) and discrete fans, there is no noise problem whatsoever.

If you don't have the "discrete" fan on your system, ask Lenovo to ship you one and replace it yourself -- it is just a few screws. You will not be disappointed.

tvsjr, what are you doing pasting military notebooks made for battle or being dropped from a airplane and survive. give me a break.

EOMp, its not the fan it self but the noise of air leaving the PC from a fan going 3000 rpm. i doubt yours is anything different. T60P is FAR from silent compared to many other notebooks. many much cheaper notebooks allow fan speed below 2500 and 1500 and not just 2900 - 3300 and 3800.

there are many many people also complaining about fan noise from the t60p due to the fast rpm speed even when its running as slow as it can. just do a search on tpfancontrol, lol

A counterpoint here: after reading about all the fan noise complaints on these forums, I was surprised to discover that my father's T60 is very quiet (no, not silent, but very quiet) at the 2900 rpm base fan speed.

I don't know what type of fan his unit has, though.

if some t60p are very silent and others are not with the same configuration, one have to question the build quality.

Ergo, call IBM/Lenovo DE and tell them to ship you one of the newer fans or just a replacement for the one you have now.

I'll repeat. My T60P is dead silent, more quiet than the T41P it replaced, and it's used for very heavy CAD/CAM work.

I disagree with JHEM's statement that T60p is dead-silent. Mine has ATI PowerPlay enabled, and preferred settings (both AC and battery) set to "optimized for battery" but the GPU temp still hovers around 65c, and the fan is constantly at 2900rpm or so. The noise is definitely there, just not to the point of annoying me too much.

If you know a way to reduce the GPU temp further, please let me know.

i cant keep my fan at 2900 and all the power settings is not making it any easier. i have powerplay enabled which offer some intelligence then ontop of that there is windows vista own power management and then on top of that there is lenovo power management.

on top of that it seems that if lenovo power management is set to maximum performance, then some confusing bar, with the danish name "noise-level for fan" will go up and it seems like the system allow more heat before going from 2900 which is the lowest speed to 3400 rpm. so at one point i have to put more heat to the system to make it go down to 2900 rpm. but that was more XP, in vista its always on 3400 and noisy as hell
