T60P WS samsung Screen disappoints
T60P WS samsung Screen disappoints
I received my newest T60P wide screen today and was disappointed in the screen. I used a freeware program called aida32 (easy to google) which identifies the specific components of the system and entered the manufacturer code number that came up (LTN154P2-L05) into google. It came up as a Samsung LCD screen 1600X1080. I like the speedy performance of the TP but am chagrined at the washed out look of the Samsung screen. I compared the screen to my last T60 which is a 1.86 duo core 14.1" and I used aida32 to identify its monigtor component. That screen is a Toshiba and is crustal clear and bright with white whites, very different from the newer Samsung.
I have read in the listings that there is a LG-Phillips screen for my machine that is far better, but of course you cant order a machine with a specific LCD manufacturer. SO I am returning the machining to Lenovo. I frankly am a little disturbed that they should provide a downgrade to their first widescreen on a T60. It doesnt bode well for the futrure. I do not know if I ordered a regular T60 with a 15" screen whether I'd get the same inferior Samsung screen.
Be careful with your clientel, Lenovo. We are very discriminating.

I may be wrong but I think the Samsung screens on the rest of the line (12" on the x60 and 14" and 15" on the T60) are pretty much the same as the others. Am I correct in my understanding of this or are the 4:3 Samsung screens bad as well?

Samsung 14" 1400x1050 screens are fine if not better. But 15" could be a different story.

follow up on disappointing Samsng screen in T60P
Microcenter had a series of thinkpads lined up including a lenovo Z61T and a N100. The Z61T had a samsung LCD screen and the N100 had a reflective LG-Phillips. The difference between them in terms of clarity and saturation and white whites was very striking. Even accounting for the reflective screen on the N100 the samsung was, as I noted before, very dull and washed out with marked shadowing when the axis of visison was changed just a few degrees. I would add it was difficult to read small type on a white background. The manager of the store fully agreed. I think Lenovo has made a big mistake in selling this screen in its top of the line thinkpad series and owes an apology, not just an explanation. They may not be taking the IBM THINKPAD logo as seriously as they had promised. I hope this message gets to them.
Yes, absolutely
Yes. I was able to run aida32 and the screen came up with the same manufacturers number as the screen on my (returned) T60P. That number is in my first post at the beginning of this thread. If there was any way to guarantee getting an LG-Phillips LCD with a T series, I would most definitely do it.
Re: follow up on disappointing Samsng screen in T60P
Did you check to see if the Z61T really was Samsung or another mfg? I think I saw that same display at Microcenter, and I recall being impressed with how much clearer it was than my T60 15.4" (which definitely was a Samsung)... in fact, if it hadnt been for the GMA, I would have purchased the Z61T right there.aweingrad wrote:Microcenter had a series of thinkpads lined up including a lenovo Z61T and a N100. which was the sumsung screen?
Hmmm, at the microcenter laptop lineup I am now dont have a clear recollection of WHICH machine had the samsuing and which had the LG-Phillips, but whichever ones had them the distinction between them was easily perceived. The samsung was clearly inferior.
One last thing
I've been trying to find an official users discussion group on the Lenovo web site so I could post my experience and opinion of the samsung screens on the T60p. I would hope that would get quickly to the Lenovo marketing people and maybe we could see some changes. Does anyone have the url of such a users group? Our is not an official site. I couldnt find one at Lenovo itself. Is there one?
lenovoblogs
Thank you.I checked the blogs and actually contacted a VP of marketing who assures me he will look into this. I'll get bak to you guys what he says.

I just got a 15.4" T60 (8744-HDG), and I was of course curious to find out about my display. System Info from Gabriel Topala gives me this:
Monitor Name ThinkPad Display 1680x1050
Monitor ID IBM2887
Manufacturer Lenovo
Manufacturing Date 2005, Week 0
Digital Display Input
Display Size 15.4" (33 cm x 21 cm)
Current Resolution 1680 x 1050 @ 50Hz - Aspect Ratio 16:10
I am surprised it doesn't say Manufacturer=LTN154P2-L05 or something like this. Any ideas?

I dont think so
Uh, I dont think so. If you google the part number it comes up as Smsng.
Try doing it this : download aida32 ( I googled it and downloaded it from geeks.com I think). Run that program and under display/monitor/thinkpadLCD you'll get a true manufacturers part number. Put THAT number into google and look around until you see who manufactures it.
I'm guessing its samsung again, but hey if you love the monitor, who cares. The problem comes when you stack it up against other monitors and see the difference.

13N7020 is listed as LG-Phillips by Lenovo: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 66977.html

comments were for widescreen T60p
A current listing raves about the gorgeous samsung 15" screen on a T60.
I want to be clear that my own comments were on a samsung WS 15.5" which I do not find to be gorgeous. I dont have a standard samsung 15" to compare so I dont know if there is a difference.
Can anyone else comment on the WS screens?
Lenovo is taking back my machine and will compare it side by side with their other oem LCD vendors to see if there is a systemic issue with the samsung WS. I'll report back what they say and do.

I have a ws T60 with Samsung screen, no problem here except the default contrast (neutral) set by the ATI controller is a bit soft, I increase it by 12% using ATI control center, and it's all good, white is whiter and black is blacker.
I use my laptop at least 10 hours a day, no straining on my eyes or anything.
My complain is the battery life seems to suffer with the larger screen (or is it the 2ghz Core 2 Duo CPU) but I probably can get only 2 hours of use with the screen set to medium brightness. I can get 3 hours with my T60 14.1" 1.8ghz laptop.
