increase display DPI without distortion?

I'm finding it a bit more comfortable to read on my T60p 1400 x 1050 Flexview if I increase the DPI to "large" i.e. 120 DPI in the display settings; however, doing so results in icons becoming distorted/pixelated in the tray and start menu programs list...is there a way to avoid this ugly side-effect?
also, for those who may have it installed, is this at all improved in Vista (as I heard scaling is supposed to be better) ?

It is definitely improved with Vista.
Even with XP, though, you might get better results by leaving the DPI setting as is, and just adjusting the font sizes of the individual display elements in Display Properties > Appearance > Advanced.

What setting controls the font size for the labels of items on the desktop. I would like to SHRINK them a bit without changing the font size of anything else. Is this possible? Thanks.

@npish - using Font Size under Appearance (Display settings) provides better results than DPI. I learned that little trick here in the forums, and I like the results better than DPI. ... JD Hurst

thanks for the replies; I have messed with font sizes, which does help, but I was hoping for a more consistent DPI adjustment so as to scale all interface elements in a unified way; perhaps this will prove to be one practical improvement in Vista....we'll see, if I ever get my express upgrade disc...
