Thinkpad Wireless Performance Bad?

Here at the university that I am at, I am wondering how come my wireless performance is so bad. I have a friend that has a laptop with an Intel 2295 or 2200, I forget which, and his speed test shows about 25 mbit down and 5 mbit up. However, the same speedtest on mine is only 6/3. I have the wireless set to maximum performance for power savings, firewall is off, and i'm on the same network, on the same access point, on the same protocol (802.11a). What gives? I am using the Thinkpad a/b/g/ wireless card on my T60 WS that I just got a few days ago... it's the Atheros AR5001+ I believe.
